yes - you REALLY shouldnt. there are a few reasons, some medical - it can mess up your body! and it doesnt make the antibiotics work as well -actualy, hardly at all, so there would be no point taking them. it also makes you get drunk realy quickly (which you may see as good) but that then has further affect on your body mixed with the antibiotics!
so in conclusion... dont drink with antibiotics!! its not good!! im sure you can manage!

I believe you can drink alcohol with some types. Doctor/chemist should have told you if you couldn't drink with them. Is there an instruction leaflet in the box?

Does any one know if its true that you should not drink while on antibiotics. Any experiences???
Just been given a course of erythromycin antibiotics and dont know whether to drink. Cant go a full weekend without drinking! :frown:

I was on erythromycin for about 4 months. I drank whilst on them. It doesn't do anything. The only thing it will do is stop the tablets you have took that day from working, but thats about it. Mine were for my skin, so they were all ready in my sytem so didn't make my skin flare up or anything. If your on a short course of antibiotics though i suggest you drink in moderation. My docter told me it's ok to drink alcohol with erythromycin if in moderation.

I personally wouldn't touch alcohol whilst on antibiotics after a nasty experience I had drinking after having paracetamol - I had 1 drink and ended up throwing up and feeling really ill. Not nice when everyone else is having fun!

Thats paracetamol. Antibiotics are completely different.

At any case you shouldn't be out partying if you are so sick you need an antibiotics course. Why don't you just invite some friends over for pizza and watch a football game or smth?

I think drinking on paracetamol can increase damage to your liver so not a good idea. As for antibiotics, I believe that alcohol acts as an inhibitor to some but not all so read the leaflet you got with them.

Stay off the alcohol when on antibiotics, it's just not worth the trouble that it can cause.

I had tonsilitis when at a party, and I had to go without drinking because of the Penicillin. It was hard, and my mates took the mickey out of me, but at least I got to laugh at their hangovers in the morning!

Haha all i know is that whenever i drink on anti-whatevers, i always end up getting really drunk...

I work in a pharmacy and get people ask the same question all the time. There is one antibiotic that you definatelt cannot drink with and that is Metronidazole as it can make you violently sick. But it would probably be ok in moderation to have a drink with erythromycin. But if you want them to work it might be an idea for just one weekend to avoid alcohol.

it can be dangerous but when i last had a chest infection i got real wasted because i drank after taking some tablets. some of my cuzins said that once people start to get poor at uni they will buy anti biotics off people, take them and then have like one pint and be absoultly wrecked

The issue here isnt whether you should drink or not, but why you can't go a weekend without alcohol? Unless that was a joke ! Erythromycin and alcohol can mix, in moderation, but I'd be very wary of drinking at all depending on what you've been prescribed them for. I mean, if it's only one course of antibiotics - what's the point? Long term I can understand but if there's something wrong inside your body then let it get better instead of going out on a friday or saturday night.

you can with some, as far as I can remember, but personally I think alcohol on that kind of medication just isn't worth the bother.

i asked him just to check

you dont need to be REALLY sick to be on antibiotics...your ill if you have acne or something lol?

nah dont do it, its really not worth it. I was on anti-biotics for a throat infection and I ended up drinking the night I went onto them just thinking I would be ok! I got drunk so easily and I literally didn't know what was going on at all, I was sick all over my bathroom and the next day I had to be in uni at 9am. I was so ill the next day, don't think I had ever felt so bad and it didn't help that I had to clean my bathroom up, which took about an hour. :frown:

Most doctors today are reluctant to prescribe antibiotics unless it is really needed as redundant use increases the chance of resistant infections developing. Also, even if you are not REALLY sick, its a good idea to be careful and take it easy if you have a bacterological infection as they can quickly get worse. My dad almost had to have his fingers amputated once as he didn't watch an infection he got from a minor cut. Within 4 days or so he was so bad they put him on intravenous antibiotics and started considering wether they could save his fingers or not.

Btw, if I remember correctly you are not supposed to drink during the antibiotics acne treatment ( Is it tetracyclines they use normally ? ). At least they told me to stay off alcohol when I was on it.
