You can, yes, but it's obviously advised against. An insurance choice is there in case you miss your firm offer, so if you don't meet your firm, you won't meet your insurance.

Your firm is the university you want to go to most, if you meet the conditions, that's where you'll be going. Your insurance is where you'll go if you don't meet your firm, but obviously you'll have to meet the conditions too.

    Does that clear anything up?

On occasions it is possible to get into an insurance choice which has higher requirements than your firm.

Say your firm choice requires ABB and your insurance wants AAB. On results day you end up with AAC (or even A*A*C) and are rejected by your firm because of your C - perhaps because the uni has had to be strict as it has sufficient students to fill the course from those who have completely fulfilled their offers. However, your insurance choice might not be full up and can therefore take you.

Yes you can. Firm should be the place you really want to go, screw the grades for the time being.

If you fail to meet your firm, you go to your insurance, providing you meet the grades / they accept you.
