    Hey guys,

I went to the doctors today for something and she took my blood pressure, I don't think I've ever had it taken before that I can remember.

Well it was really high, I don't understand blood pressure but the doctor looked a bit shocked and she said ''gosh that's high'' it was 180 over something .

She asked me if I was anxious or stressed and I told her I get a little anxious at the doctors and she seemed to think maybe that's why it was so high. She has put me on a list for a home monitoring blood pressure thing so I can check it at home and then take the results to her.

I'm just a bit worried really, am I going to drop down dead or something? is it normal?

I'm only 19 and pretty healthy I would say, so yeah I'm just a bit confused about it as she didn't seem to explain it very well to me.

I found out I have high blood pressure early last year and I've just been discharged from a specialist. I started taking 5mg of Lisinopril a day and they tested my heart and checked my kidneys/ liver and I wore a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours. (High blood pressure can be a symptom of other things.) The doctor said there's nothing wrong with me and some people just have higher blood pressure. He said if 5mg of medication is all it takes to keep things under control then that's fine and he's happy for me to continue as I am. So it can be nothing to worry about, but they'll check you out before saying you're ok

A one off high reading may just be that. Sometimes it's referred to as white coat hypertension: ie caused by the anxiety of being in the docs. They'll probably want to check it again at another appointment to see if it's high and take it from there .

Next time you get it checked, be calm and don't fret because it affects your B.P. The same thing happened to me but when I went for a recheck it was shown as normal! Don't worry too much! :hugs:

Well I wouldn't worry too much because its just a one off reading. Like you mentioned stress can cause increased reading. However, you'll be surprised by the number of doctors who don't know how to take a correct reading! A lot of the time they use a cuff which is too small (cba to change it) and this can give elevated readings for people with large arms e.g. big men. Not saying that you're a big man or anything!

But back to the point, the other readings should give a better indication of your blood pressure over time and if they remain elevated for a sustained period of time then you would probably be referred to a cardiologist or equivalent specialist. An isolated reading is not sufficient to draw any conclusions.

    So relax!
