Ive just been put on the pill for the first time too and this is what the doc told me:

start it the first day of your next period
on the day which is on the pack (the tablets are taken on the day the pack says)
take it for 3 weeks
dont take it for one week and I repeat one week as in 7 days, no more no less
when you stop taking it you should get your period shortly
start taking it on the correct day for example if you start on a wednesday, take it for 3 weeks and not for one then you should take the pill marked wednesday as that should be the day you take it

if you get headaches beware of any bright lights or tingling, she also said to stop taking it if you get headaches like that and see your doctor!

I havent even started mine yet as my period isnt for another week and a bit though

oh and more tips: take it at roughly the same time each day at a time you're going to remember to take it, things like not taking it one day, being sick or being on antibiotics will affect how it works as well. If you forget to take it, it can bring on bleeding sooner than it should happen as well

When you get it, you should be given instructions from your GP etc. Take it on the first day of your period and then for three weeks, having a 7 day break (in which you get your period). Try to take them at a time convenient to you. My friend started taking hers at 9pm and forgets it so often because she forgets to take it out with her etc. Another friend takes hers at 6pm but also has to be careful with timing as its easy to forget. I personally find it easier to take mine in the morning (I set my alarm for 8.45am anyway, so take it around 9am) as I find it easier to remember as part of the same morning routine everyday (ie get up, bath, teeth, pill) which means I've not forgotten it or had to rush home!!
Some symptoms are normal for the first time, if they're really bad moodswings/pain etc, then just see how it goes and if after 2-3 months it's no different, change pills when you go back to get your next lot.

if you have irregular periods, you can take it straight away. Because if your anything like me you dont want to wait months before being able to go on it.

i started taking the pill for the 1st time a week ago tommorrow and as i couldn't be bothered to wait for my period it should've kicked in from tommorrow
sexual health direct said being unprotected for the 1st week is the only thing that happens when you start the pill on a day other than the 1st day of your period (i phoned them because i forgot to ask my doctor) that there should be no other side effects.
