Only if you're burning more calories than you're consuming.

No. Get running

They say one of the best exercises is walking

Walking is a very general verb.

Are you walking fast, slow, down hills, up hills etc?

I was just wondering does walking everyday for about 90 minutes help you to lose a lot of weight?

 Live Life To Da Fullest:wink:

Depends. If you take a brisk walk, YES!
I would personally advise you to CYCLE for 45 minutes.
Also, reduce your intake of food.

carl - compared to what? sitting in front of the tv then yeah, but pretty much any other 'physical' activity leaves it for dead in terms of weight loss etc

I've heard that too. Walking for 90 minutes is probably equivalent to running for some shorter period of time, but it still would burn a lot of calories.

Walking for 90 mins a day would edf help you loose weight! I think tis after 30 mins you start to burn fat.
When i got a dog and started walking more and lost weight.

run, you burn more and it doesnt take as long, plus watch what your eating

Reply 10

Im sure it's a good place to start for somebody who is extremely unfit (moreso than the 'average' person off the street), but shouldn't be considered an activity taken to 'get fit' in any way, or really suitable for the loss of 'lots of weight'

I don't understand this advice. Maybe the OP enjoys walking around town rather than running. They're both exercise.

Who's they? Americans maybe? In which case I would exactly observe it to be a calorie burner.

IMO, if you want to burn calories, jog.

Reply 13

It can do, I used to be rather large until my mum forced me to walk to school. Now some people consider me to be skinny. I cant really think of anything else i did, still eat rubbish etc ...maybe smaller portions though.

Walking is good as it doesn't strain joints and uses a lot of muscles.
But do you "comfort eat" ?

Note About the Calories Chart
You burn more calories per mile at very low speeds because you are basically stopping and starting with each step and your momentum isn't helping to carry you along. Meanwhile, at very high walking speeds you are using more muscle groups with arm motion and with a racewalking stride. Those extra muscles burn up extra calories with each step. Running may burn more calories per mile as there is an up and down motion lifting your weight off the ground as well as moving it forward.

Don't think the OP will be racewalking though, esp. not for 90 minutes!

But really it's not about how far you go but for how long you exercise

yes. my mum has walked for the last 3 months for about 90mins/2 hours a day, but really fast walking. she hasn't changed her diet at all but has lost a couple of dress sizes, it definitely works.
