It depends, if your applying online or using an application form. If your using a paper appplication form, it should take the whole page.

What is the word limit for personal statements?
Appreciated.

47 lines long, 1.5 cm margins, font size 12.
That just fills the box you have on the UCAS form.

They always say they give you 47 lines etc, but in actual fact, they always cut it down to 45.

Not if you do it on Electronic Application - I'm sure that's how it fits and you do it yourself before sending it to your administrator. The administartor doesn't change things.
I suppose you could use the whole 47 lines, but the best ones I've seen have a space between each paragraph - looks much more classy and is definitely easier to read by an admissions tutor! (Mind you, you then have about 3 lines less to put all your amazing stuff in)
