True, although I think people are looking for something to hate in Avril Lavigne's song. Might also be to do with how Gwen Stefani isn't so prominent in the charts as she was ten years ago, it seems that now, or certainly in the last few years, people are more sensitive to things that are a little non PC. I suspect if Turning Japanese by The Vapors was released today there'd be radio stations refusing to play it. Similarly, no-one bats an eyelid when a black rapper drops an N bomb in their lyrics, but if a white artist did it, there'd be a few eyebrows raised, at least.
Or maybe people just hate Avril Lavigne.
I don't think people even on the internet have been talking about Lavigne to be honest. She hasn't been relevant for a while.
Your comment on Gwen's chart performance made no sense whatsoever. During 'Harajuku Girl', Gwen was smashing:
'Rich Girl' reached No 7, 'Hollaback Girl' was No 1 for multiple weeks, 'Cool' peaked at No 13, whilst 'Luxurious' hit No 21. HG was actually the very first song in the United States to ever cross a million digital copies sold.
Love, Angel, Music, Baby sold around 7-8 million copies world-wide.
'Hello Kitty'?
HK has yet to chart, whilst 'Give You What You Like' and 'How You Reminded Me' both failed to crack the Top 100. 'Let Me Go' No 78, 'Rock n Roll' No 91, with 'Here's To Never Growing Up' matching LAMB's fifth single as a lead single at No 20. This era followed four other flop singles from the last, with the current self-titled album selling only an embarrassing 650,000 copies world-wide.
So if anything, Gwen was the one who was prominent on the charts with the Japanese appropriation.

If you want to compare their year-to-year chart performance, which won't be fair anyway as Gwen is a lot older and has made it big a lot earlier, Gwen still wins with the only two album eras she had.
Really struggling to see the issue with this here... if you don't like the song fair enough, but its not like the video has gone to any weird extremes unless you find cupcakes offensive of course
