Bath Pharmacy Students

Hi, I have firmed to do Pharmacy at Bath next year.

I just wondered if there were any current pharmacy students at Bath who could tell me a bit about the course? I've read everything on the website and been to all the open days etc. However, could you explain your (year/time at bath) for me? How have you found it? What have you enjoyed? Have you enjoyed it? How does your timetable work in terms of sport commitments etc?

Thanks in advance, any insight would be brilliant!

Hello
I'm a second year pharmacy student at Bath (third year in September!)
You will really enjoy your time at Bath, I have so far even though sometimes what you're learning seems pointless and your timetable seems ridiculous!
In first year you basically go over a lot of biology and chemistry, you only have 2 exams in January which is nice as most other courses have 4/5. Then in the summer i think you have 4 or 5 (I can't remember haha!)
You have a LOT of 9.15 lectures and a few 8.15 lectures which can be a pain. But if you're on campus you can leave your room at 8 and still make it in time so that's fine. It's when you live in Oldfield park like me in future years when that is really awful! The timetable is VERY hectic but once you get into the swing of it it's not so bad. And it changes every week unlike other courses which have the same timetable every week. In one of your induction lectures they give you a timetable and it looks so horrible but when you break it down it's not actually that bad. You always get wednesday afternoons off so don't worry about things clashing with sports clubs (these normally take place on wednesday afternoons and in evenings)
You don't actually do that much that is specifically pharmacy based until the second semester when you touch on law and communication skills etc.
You have a lot of lectures and also some practicals in 1st year (you will be given a lab coat and glasses during the first week)
I'm not going to lie, it is difficult but you will enjoy it and get lots out of it, just think about the end goal, that's what I'm doing!
DON'T buy the textbooks they tell you to before you go as you don't use half of them. I made the silly mistake of buying them all and have only used one of them. You can get the others in the library and lecturers always recommended different ones to the list you get given!

Second year is even more difficult but I'm still enjoying it (even though exams are in 2 weeks time and I have 5!)
Sorry I don't want this post to seem negative because I really am enjoying it and it's really interesting
Feel free to ask any other questions! Hope this helped

That's OK

Honestly I have no idea as pharmacy at Durham is new and wasn't an option when I applied for uni. I love Bath itself so would stay here but I can't really answer as I know nothing about Pharmacy at Durham, I do think Durham is a really nice place though. It's quite similar to Bath
Sorry I can't be more help!

The Campus in which Pharmacy is taught is in Stockton on tees which is like 30 miles from Durham :/
I was going to firm Bath but then people will telling me that a lot of the students they met on Open days and interviews seemed to com across a bit negative when approached about the course :?
Plus I spoke to a few 4th year students and 2 of them said that it wasn't good, but one of them told me not to listen to them :/

Ah right I see.. that might have put me off to be honest but it depends on the facilities and accommodation available etc!

Well I enjoy the course, like I said above it is a very hectic timetable and sometimes you wonder why you're learning some things but it is all so interesting and is really worth it! I love being in Bath, the town is lovely and the nightlife is actually really good even though some says its not as good as other places. The course is pretty much the same all over the country due to the regulations in place so no matter where you choose to go which is why I took the town and uni itself into great consideration also.

All students will get fed up with the course they're doing sometimes, it's only natural to be bored sometimes and overloaded with work but that's not just pharmacy, that's everyone so don't worry too much

Thanks for replying, you have given me a postive prospective of Pharmacy at Bath. What other offers did you have at the time if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks again, really appreciated!

Glad I could help

My insurance choice was Keele, I also had Manchester, Aston and Nottingham (I ended up withdrawing my application to Nottingham as I didn't really like it and had just got my offer from Bath when it was interview time!)

You will literally be fine with the following:
B Maths
C English
B Biology
B Chemistry

They are more focused about your A-levels than your GCSE's and your passion for the role.

Both courses good, but durham edges it for me.
Students I spoke to at bath weren't very complementary, especially about course. The opposite at durham, where students were very helpful and all said it was excellent.
Although you shouldn't think about the university, I think in five years time it would be better to have a degree from durham with its reputation, specially if jobs are hard to get.

The campus thing is actually a positive I think, especially since durham has colleges. Students also told me it not a problem coz there is free bus to durham until about 3am!

I just wasn't a fan, and had really had my heart set on Bath anyway  but so many people love Nottingham so I think I was a bit strange!

Yeah but it's not like 10 miles away though.
I am not keen on Stockton :/

It's about 30-40mins on bus. Campus is also self contained isn't it.
I also had concerns about the campus and area, but went to open day and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Actually campus and accommodation were very nice.

In first year you have to do 1 essay, 1 piece of group work, a group presentation and a communication exercise at the end of the year. From what I can remember that's the only coursework for the year, you also have a few practicals which you need to attend to pass.. you only have 2 exams in January which isn't many compared to other people and then 5 in summer (which is more normal!) I'm not gonna lie, the exams are difficult but you're studying for a degree so it's expected and is probably like this everywhere! If you revise hard enough then you can do it. And I know this sounds bad but first year doesn't count so getting 40% isn't the end of the world while you get into the swing of uni life (obviously people try to do better than that!)
Second year has been harder than first year. Semester one has lots of work involved, you have to do coursework as you do in second semester. And you have 5 exams in both January and the summer (which I'm currently revising for!) you also have practicals to do, in second semester some of these count towards the coursework mark. In second year you do dispensing practicals which all count as coursework towards one of the modules and then have to do a communication exercise with a patient which also counts.

I'm not too sure about 3rd and 4th year other than you do a dissertation in 3rd year and a project in 4th year.
Hard work but worth it
