Me :)
Erm the title basically sums it up. My IB coordinator told us that we can't really get a part time job during the next 2 years because we'll have so much homework and time management is really important etc. so it needs to be done.

Does anyone agree? Has anyone on here managed to survive the IB so far and still get/keep a saturday job?

Thank you

Well, almost everyone on the IB in my college had a part time job (Saturday jobs mostly) and we seemed to cope OK. I suppose you may be best to see how it goes, if you find there is too much IB work then don't bother with finding a job. . . .
yeah loads of pple i know have them i think its easily managemeble once u can control ur urge to procrastinate

i agree with andy.. to survive the ib, you gotta keep on top of your work.. don't even think of letting it pile up, or you're going to end up pulling an all-nighter or five.. but i think that if you make sure you keep yourself disciplined, you'll probably be able to pull it off.. you're just going to have to give up a little more of your time (obviously), whether you're doing IB or A-levs
my gosh part time job? hahaha i wouldn't even think of it, my work keeps piling :frown:

Hi,
Yes, you will be able to get a part time job, but be ready to also have some very tiring weeks. If you can get it, so that the work is on the end of the week and first day of the weekend, you will still have a whole day free to do homework.

Naturally some periods of the year are more hectic than others, i.e. when deadlines loom, so you should try and organise time off during those periods, otherwise its doable, so long as you are willing to put in the extra work.

Hi there
It is possible to do the IB and have a part-time job, as experience tells me (althought I have only just finished my first year). Most other people in my IB group have part-time job too and they seem to do well  so you shouldn't worry. It's down to your time-management skills really  I guess you just have to see for yourself though, as each one of us is different

Job or no job, you will need that ability if you want to meet some "certain" deadlines.

"Time-management" is the operative word(s). Why you would want a part-time job during term time is beyond me (unless you're really strapped for cash). I've finished my first year in IB and I managed a part-time job during the holidays at least, but you've got to get your other priorities sorted (Extended Essay, coursework, university applications, holidays).

Thanks for all the replies  If I do get a part time job (I think I'll probably apply and see how it goes), it will be for less than 8 hours and I'll give it up if it all becomes tooo stressful. Actually considering swapping from IB to A level at the moment so this may less of an issue.

By the way, Optimistic, what are your HL and SL subjects? (noticed you're applying for medicine)

You should be able to do a part-time job, I do so many things apart from IB!!

Yeah you should be able to manage it, in your first year especially. I had a part time job all the way through and, while it was ok in the first year, I left a lot of work too late in the second year and being in college mon-fri then work sat and sun REALLY started to take it's toll, even more so during exam time (I skipped work at one point to revise!). It all worked out ok, I got good grades, but I know I should have planned my work a bit more and not left things til the last minute. If I hadn't I'd have probably gotten more than a handful of hours of sleep every night mid Feb-May lol. So yes, you can do it, as long as you keep it to Saturdays and remeber that your IB is more important that a cr*ppy Saturday job (hence the skipping work to revise) and get your work done before your dealines

I found it was ok personally, working 12 hours a week through both years of my IB course and ended up with 40 points. It's do-able just depends on how much free 'down' time you want really. Have to say I didn't have that much time just to myself between school and work.

It's definitely doable. I worked 33 hours a week and still able to manage to receive my ib diploma with a good mark. It's really how you manage your time properly. and work hard during class time
Any part time job ...I accept
Please
I need one part time job

I think maybe if you like the job then it's probably a good idea to get the job to relax.

I don't personally know anyone who does it, but it's definitely doable (just think of it as another activity for building your PS for college and it's the same as working in labs, volunteering in care homes, etc.)
Regardless of whether it's doable, it's inadvisable.

You're putting your academic career on the line to earn £4 an hour. Just do A-levels if you aren't that invested in it...

This is speaking as someone who did the IB. Unless it's part time voluntary work that will form part of your CAS, or an application to e.g. Medicine, it's completely not worth it, regardless of whether you can do it. That's 8 hours you could spend catching up on your work, or more reasonably having some breathing space to yourself to avoid losing your mind. Also, that's £36 a week. Literally, you can probably get that much dumpster diving for 2 hours a week.
