Hi,

I never lived in Marl/Sols but spent quite a lot of time at a friend's flat in Marlborough, so had the chance to compare it to my own room (in Westwood).

The rooms are large, with high ceilings and lots of space. Comfortable, decent sized bed, large bathroom (i'm told the shower is powerful but goes cold from time to time), and good sized desk. There seemed to be limited storage space though - just a wardrobe and one large shelf - my friend had stuff stacked on the floor in the corner but i guess if you wanted you could get some kind of collapsible shelves for there.

The buildings are only a few years old, and have new kitchens - with minimal damage! I did notice that the walls are thin enough to let the noise of loud music through, but the ceilings seemed thick enough to stop upstairs noise coming down.

As for moving out - make friends with people in other blocks and shift all your cookware etc into their rooms - thats what my marlborough friend did. Do a tesco order before then and save the crates for transporting your stuff too!

I am hopefully going to get a place in marlborough if my conditional offer is met. But as for for the printer, i have just brought an all in one printer scanner copier as I remember someone saying how useful they are, especially for the engineering course.

Printer is a good idea. However might be easier to buy a cheap one (i got an epson all in one for £65 and it wasnt the cheapest) rather than carry it to england.

You could manage without a lamp as the rooms have lots of lighting. If you want it bedside you'll need an extension lead. One design fault is that ALL the plugs are above the desk which is a long way from the bed. Again perhaps something to buy in bath.

As for toilet brush, my westwood room came with one but it was really disgusting so i replaced it. Dont know about eastwood rooms. It might depend whether the previous occupant left one or not. The pound shop in bath should sell these, or else a supermarket.

Those photos of a room are the same as a marlborough room - but Opiache had her furniture arranged slightly differently (drawers udner the desk, bedside table next to wardrobe). You can move some of the furniture around easily.

thx  thats really helpful. how about bed linen? i read in another thread that the ones that they provide are kinda yucky, but the prosp. says that we shouldnt bring our own "soft furnishings". does that involve bed linen?
Reply 15
I'm choosing to read it as don't take youre own duvet, but can take youre own duvet cover and pillow cases. Im also taking my favourite pillow (the hypoallergenic one!) from home...though I was wondering how many the uni supplies you with..?

two sets of bed linen (duvet cover, sheets, pillow cases) which the change weekly...but yucky :P

The duvet cover gets changed twice during the year... they change one sheet and one pillow case every week.

As for bringing ur own stuff - theres no problem with sheets and duvet covers / pillow cases (although again if you're flying in perhaps its something to buy in bath). Technically oyu shouldnt have pillows or duvets but loads of people did and i dont know of anyone being told to get rid of them. Its just so that they're covered if your bed goes up in flames!

At least Marlborough has comfy bed and dark rooms - good for getting to sleep. I found it easier to sleep in a marlborough room during the day than in my westwood room at night!
