Loose or gain weight at uni...

I have been thinking about this and had a chat with my mate about it...I reckons uni students probably loose weight during term time.... because they are too poor to buy food/forget to eat with all the partying/ eat less cause there is more pressure...

She however can imagine getting stuck into a rut of eating porridge/toast and jam and other snacky things rather than meals.

What are your opinions on this, also is it worth slimming down a bit before I go, just cause of all the calories I'm gonna consume in freshers week on alcohol alone?

Some people lose weight, some people gain it. Just watch what you're doing and you'll be fine

I gained it:mad:  .

I put on weight at uni - eating at dodgy times and living on a carb diet isn't good
Most people tend to gain weight because they dont eat properly and live off cheap junk food. But if you're aware of this then it'll be easy to limit yourself and eat more healthily. I guess those that lose weight are the ones who dont eat more junk food and therefore eat less food generally as fruit etc can be quite expensive compared to chocolate! Just try to be careful and it'll be fine

Fruit is cheap as chips!

I always buy fruit as snacks, I feel guilty eating chocolate...

I hope i'll lose it to be honest. My daily diet of one bagel with salami, lettuce and brie...hehe.

But wine is fattening. Argh.
I gained about half a stone. Sometimes you're so busy that instead of eating properly you'll grab a snack and then eat again later. Or if you need to buy some lunch in town, because you're poor you'll buy something calorific and grease-laden from Greggs because it's cheaper than a proper sandwich, or just something with loads of mayo. There's also the alcohol, which most people have too much of, and a dreadful tendency to get a kebab/burger and chips/malteser pancake (mmmmmmmm) after a night out. You're a bit drunk and everyone else is doing it, so you just forget about the calories, or justify it by saying everyone else will get fat too.

Seriously. Be prepared to inflict serious torture on your internal organs. Next year I intend to cut out saturated fat, refined sugars and beer, and go to the gym four times a week. We'll see how long it lasts. I give it about thirty seconds.

Catered can go either way - lots of high fat cheaply produced rubbish = weight gain...or food so disgusting u have no choice but to starve = weight loss

I tried that at the end of last year, lasted about as long as your prediction:rolleyes: .

That sounds mighty attractive, could I get a recipie for that? I'm guessing it isn't in Deliah Smiths:p:
I'm hoping to lose weight, but that's because I'm too fat now and allready on a diet and swimming program, which I intend to keep up during university, as well as looking into taking up some sport/s particularly rugby and snowboarding (if they have it).

I'm living right next to the gym so i'll just keep going every day and watch my diet, which should allow me to get fooked up as and when is neccessary whilst staying relatively healthy.

I lost a stone within the first term at uni.

However, that coincided with a bout of tonsillitis that stopped me from eating solids for a week.
In first year I was miserable, comfort ate and gained nearly 2 stones.
I lost most of that during the summers through healthy eating and the gym, and in the second and third years I was happy and kept it off

It is easy to put on weight at uni, especially if you're suspectible to weight gain anyway like me, but if you're ready for it, you can head off those extra pizza and alcohol calories by walking everywhere etc., and eating healthily at every opportunity!!

I think I'm about the same weight now as when I left school, possibly a bit more.

I put on about a stone in my gap year and did nothing to shift that in the first term, then I got glandular fever and lost most of that. Fluctuated over the summer but then I started rowing and so it was all under control. Then I went on the Pill  and put on a fair bit, mostly on my boobs and stomach which I didn't like. I went on the GI diet last summer and got back to normal. This last term I lost nearly a stone through exam stress and not eating much, combined with rowing. And now I'm back at home and there are too many choccie bikkits around.

I actually find it easier to avoid comfort eating at uni than at home. At home, there are always crisps or biscuits in the cupboard, whereas at uni, if I don't buy them, they're not there so I can't eat them. I snack on fruit mainly - the only time my weight goes up at uni is if I'm drinking loads. Although I never eat in the middle of the night post-clubbing (chips at 2am just doesn't appeal fortunately) I do sometimes find I need to eat more the next day to keep awake.

Just be aware of what you're doing, don't be too strict on yourself but watch so that if changes do start happening, you can take some action.

I've lost quite a bit apparently, a few people have told me. I don't weigh myself so I don't know how much exactly but it's probably to do with me being too lazy to make food for myself. Plus I stopped snacking. At home, the kitchen is right next to the living room so it's easy to get food to snack on but in halls the kitchen seemed so far away from my room (I told you I was lazy).

Now the challenge has been to keep away from the fridge now I'm back at home! I think I've managed it, I've lost even more weight which is good
