Remark for Math HL

Hi,
Last July 5th I received my IB results and I, as my Math Teacher, was a little disappointed because I did not get the 7 I was expecting in Mathematics HL. Yesterday I was talking with her (my teacher) and she showed me the grades I had per component. These were:
Paper 1: 107/120 (7)
Paper 2: 102/120 (7)
Paper 3: 28/60 (4)
Portfolio: 36/40 (7)
She told me I shouls consider asking the IBO to remark my Paper 3. I wanted to know if any of you could help me (a) understanding the "re-marking process" and (b) giving me some advise whether if I should pay 85 American Dollars for remarking (my school is obviously not paying for it) or if I should stay with my 6. I hope you can help me with this.
yes! definityl send it
unles you know for sure u pissed up really badly but i mean even then to be that close to a 7!

anyway basically the process as i understand it:
u send it in
allow 4 weeksish to get it back
if the grade goes up u dont pay
if the grade goes down u do pay
but if hte grade goes down ur grade on ur report doesnt change

simple as that

if i was u i would send it back, it cant go lower and i dunno how many more points ud need for a 7 but to be that close and then have to look back and know u could have got it :p: unless of course the 7 doesnnt affect ur uni applications etc or ur job stuff idk depends on what u need the grades for...?

Hey thanks for your reply. Are you sure abou the paying thing? I want to make sure that my IBC will not keep the money haha. I think I will send it. It does not affect my uni application. I have already being accepted to University of Glasgow, but if I got that 7 I would have 40 points instead of 39 (overall in the Diploma) Big difference. What were you grades anyway?
lol another year to go... so wat did u do to get so good at maths and yeah 89 USD does sound about rite from reading other threads. Well if u see it as a big difference then its definlty important that u do it and fast, there must be a cut off date.
what happen to your paper 3 ? getting 28/60 is a very low mark .. probably you need a grade 5 to achieve a 7 .. how did you perform that day for your paper 3 ? did you feel the paper to be hard ? if no, then send for remark ..
or if no maybe u were complacent oh the possibilities

Hmmm... Paper 3 was difficult. But I expected between 30 and 40 points. I really got 26 but they added me 2 points because for soem strange reasons IB examiners add points according to the grade you get. A friend who got 45 was awarded with 4 points. I really do not understand completely the way in which they evaluate. Talking with my teacher she told me that they asked for an 81% in order to get a 7. I have 79.9%. If they find 3 or 4 additional points in paper 3 I would instantly get the 7. I think I will go for it. 85 USD is not that much after all. I hope I can get the extra points I need, I have been checking the solutions given to the paper 3 by the examiner (my teacher showed them to me) and I belive I have at least 34 points instead of 26. That would be enough. I will tell you how did it go. I have until 15th September to ask for a re-mark.

I got these grades thanks to my teacher. She is the best Math teacher I have ever had. She made us work as slaves, but as I love Mathematics I had no problem making all of her homeworks HEHE. She is very experienced. Been teaching IB for 13 or 14 years.
difficult ?? that's weird .. considering your other two papers are having a good score, you should have no problem in paper 3 .. i think this paper 3 is probably the easiest among the past papers paper 2 statistics..

anyway .. good luck ..
Sigh. How far wrong can a maths marker go?

Well my option was Differential Equations and Series. The last question (15 points) was a little bit strange. It took many people (from the world) to understand what were we required to do. My teacher told me there were some problems with teachers all over the world saying that the questions had not being stated correctly.
i see .. i wish you all the best then ..

i also took series and differential equations, and it was so messed up! i left the last question blank. so... doing good in everything else does not guarantee a good grade in paper 3.

about regrade. if it's not too late yet, i don't think you should do it. my reasoning is: in maths you either get a right answer or you don't, so you either get that point or you don't. there is no room for different interpretations like in english or in group 3 subjects, where a lot depends of the examiner. in maths, everything si quite straight forward. and.. how could you calculate that you should have gotten 34 points? you don't have the markscheme, and you don't know for which lines in the answer exactly they give points. but don't missunderstand me. i do sympathise with you, because we all know that ib is not always fair no matter how much it tries.

so... if you still think that you really want that 7, then go ahead and get it regraded. but i don't think there's a significant chance that it will get regraded.

ps: what is this thing about added points? i have never heard of it, and i am almost certain that it's a rumour. clarify?
aluakz .. did you get an A for your ToK essay ??

yes, A for the essay (40) and C for the oral (5), which averaged an A in total. why?

Aww thats such a shame!! Im in a similar situation because of paper 3...I just man...I dont know what happend...DE's killed me. It was sad since i had worked really hard and I dont get how one topic or whatever can weigh so much...
To the OP, how's the result of remark ?
