Why is energy released when a nucleus is formed from nucleons?
The strong nuclear force does work on the nucleons and pulls them in.
They lose PE, and this is released.
A nucleus is in a more bound state.

When you get something moving from higher potential to lower potential, energy out of it.
e.g water falling from mountain.
Generally things are more stable are lower potentials.
if you want to move a system from lower potential to higher potential, you need to supply work.
e.g throwing a ball on top of the mountain.

But i think from the exam questions i have seen, they talk about increase in nuclear binding energy, so talk about that. xD

Ah right so its to do with them losing potential energy and this is what is released. And regarding exam questions yeah I thought so but, it was just highly annoying not understand why it was happening.
Thanks mate.
