Visiting the GP as a temporary patient

I have been really depressed for about 8 months now. I have tried counselling, herbal remedies, self-help books and I really feel that I'd like to give anti-depressants a go, despite what everyone says about them as I'm really reaching the end of what I can cope with.

Thing is I registered with the GP on campus and so I don't actually have a GP at the moment (because I am at home - and I'll have to register with a different one next year anyway). I visited my old GP at Christmas for a virus and I went as a temporary patient. I just wondered how it would work with something like this. Do you think he will tell me that I need a regular doctor to prescribe me them so that they can check up on my progress or something?

I know that I could go and ask, but since I've been like this I have absolutely no confidence at all - and I know it sounds crazy (and not at all like I was 9 months ago), but I just need some advice on what he might say before I go so that I can cope with it.

Hey! I was in pretty much the same situation as you after my first term at uni. I went as a teporary patient to see my old family doctor back home, and he was very good. I was prescribed anti-depressants and he was always happy to give me a repeat prescription. Try explaining how you feel and that you feel it would be too much to go see your uni GP. That's what I did - I'd have felt uncomfortable seeing a GP O'd never met before about it, wheras I knew my old doctor would be great about it. Good luck!
