Pornography:Watch or Avoid?

No religious arguments please. Thank you.

Are there any moral implications that I should be aware of to the actors and the world in general?

Talking m-m porn here mostly.

If you are thinking of masturbating to it, that might be bad in the long run as it can lead to erectile dysfunction. Just saying- you are male, right?
Not really. It's true some porn isn't regulated or protected, but it depends on where it comes from. Believe it or not, much of the Hollywood porn industry in California is regulated to the hilt.

Then again, if you're honestly thinking of moral implications before watching porn you have bigger problems.
Just remember that it isn't a real representation of sex.

Can you please explain the last sentence further. I really want to make sure that the porn I watch is 'ethical'.

I'm saying that most people generally don't get into a moral or ethical debate when they just want to masturbate. That's not normal behaviour. Since you are bringing up that debate I would question whether pornography truly appeals to you.

I understand what you mean. I have the urge but I can restrain that urge if it means that I would be more moral. Do you think there are moral issues with watching porn in general?
How do I know which producers to avoid and whether the actors are unlikely to catch an STD?

I guess I care more than most people. I want to 'enjoy' as I am single at the moment but do not want to be morally indifferent.

You don't really. Watch the average porn video on the average porn site and you won't find anything to separate it from the bad.
Stop being so sensitive on the subject, everyone whacks off to some form of material and there is nothing wrong with that in fact its natural. If you want to do it, as long as you're not doing it in public you're fine.

Perhaps if when you were watching a video and the person seems to quite obviously not enjoying it, then yeah look for another one of the billions of videos on the internet. If videos unsettle you this much then use another form, pictures, fanfic (if thats your thing) hell theres even this one where all you can hear are noises and people get off on that as well.

Its natural just do it.

I think it's a positive thing that someone would question the moral and ethical implications of their actions. Perhaps the fact that it is not normal behaviour is possibly one of the things fundamentally wrong with our society?

I'm not saying this as a religious person. In fact religion has probably got in the way of individuals forming their own moral and ethical code around pleasure, seeing as pleasure seeking is deemed immoral on the whole.

God I'm feeling philosophical today...

And OP, you should also consider whether "Porn stars" are doing it truly of their own volition. Some may be doing it to pay drug or gambling debts, they could be pretty vulnerable people. It's a difficult one to judge.
Hmmm there's a massive list of sources detailing problems within the mainstream porn industry at the moment, but I can't find it right now. May post it later if I can, it's quite interesting!

For the most part porn is one of those things where it's best not to think about it too much. Pick it up when you need it and put it down just as quickly, I guess. I used to be almost addicted to porn, but barely have any interest these days as it's so unrepresentative of real sex, and I got bored of it. 99% of it stopped appealing to me at all once I became concerned with the ethics.
porn = definitely one of the best inventions of mankind
decreases rape, decreases stress, increases (natural/healthy) pleasure,
it can teach you how to do certain things if you watch it with a magnifying glass
you can select your favourite "kind" of it
and most important - it's usually free
I have no idea how people in the 1980s managed without it...
the women on tv that want to *ban* porn are absolutely insane
discouraging porn is an idea so stupid that it would take a religious person to do it

I thought masturbation was healthy and good for you?

No.
What this thread has already proved is that 'porn' means different things to different people.

Is it something staged by professionals? Is it an unknown hidden camera in someone's shower? Is it people who have filmed themselves and uploaded the content voluntarily (who, with respect to an earlier poster, are certainly not always fat)? Is it someone passed out at a party getting molested? Is it animated? etc. etc. etc.

Porn isn't good or bad. It's too diverse a subject to be that. Individual videos or clips may have been made in bad circumstances (or provoke bad consequences) but determining a general ethical rule is going to be impossible.

Increasingly I am in favour of age-related controls but provided it has all been legally and consensually produced and distributed, then adults should be free to make their own mind up. Thereafter it is just like gambling or alcohol - it may be used immorally but it may also be used perfectly responsibly.

I guess if you don't do it all the time; however, it is causing problems with the younger generations so I would be careful if I were you. This does not apply to everyone obviously but in the 21st century, there is more easily accessible porn than ever before so any health risks are a shady area as it hasn't been long enough to uncover a definite link. However, a few people have already become addicted to porn which sounds much funnier than it probably is IRL

Depends on the porn.
