Whats better for nightlife Oxford or Cambridge?

I've been asking around about cambridge nightlife. so here's the same questions for oxford:

* Are ents/bops any good? How many people usually attend? Are they on frequently? Are they fairly tame?

* Do most people just go to the pub or are the nightclubs good enough that you could go out 4 or 5 times a week and not get bored?

* What is the live music scene like?

* Are parties common?

what's oxford's night life like? and is it better than cambridge?

the entz/bops vary at each college, at our college most people tend to go and they get quite busy and are good to socialise and meet new people from in college. We have 4 a term, they are quite fun and generally generate a lot of goss!

Again we have a good bar, a lot of people tend to go there before nights out because it is cheap. There is a student night on everynight of the week, generally you will find people within college who will want to go out on each night, it does get a little repetitive but then again there are still many clubs i havent been to and places i havent been on different nights etc

Live music scene, well you have the zodiac and some small bands play at the cellar. It's generally pretty lame, but then there is always london... oxford tube runs every ten minutes and isn't that expensive.

Are we talking house parties here? I'm yet to go to one

edit; I didn't answer the most important question...Oxford's night life is better, and i'm not just being biased here. Cambridge is small and there are fewer clubs. I have friends at camb who have visited ox and said the nightlife is much better. However...I wouldn't say either of them are particularly good, there are better cities out there for clubbing!

I'm hoping to apply to one of them next year and was wondering the same thing. Oxford is a bigger city and has two bis universities so I think it must have the better nightlife.

 You have to ask this question? All Cambridge has is a fudge shop!! :p:

More seriously, what I've heard (from relatives going to both) is that BOPs / Entz vary from college to college, dependent on the students / facilities the college has. Cambridge is quieter and smaller from reports I've got back. If you don't like the sound of Oxford, you'd best hope you like fudge :p:

I have several friends who study at Cambridge but live in Oxford - they all think that the nightlife in Oxford is better. There's simply more on offer.

oxford is better. end of. more pubs, more clubs.

it also has one of the best music scenes in the country. people who are criticising the city on the musical front are very very silly; theres a hell of a lot of awesome bands based round there, and a hell of a lot of venues. sure, if you have crap taste in music and want to listen to *******s music, it lacks the kind of venues theyll be playing, but if you want an actual scene, it has one, and its one of the more regular stops on the indie touring circuit. and besides, even if you do want to see those bands that dont play, there IS the oxford tube. but there are plenty of great gigs in oxford anyway.

Very good though it does vary slightly depending on the college. The bops are normally well attended and are held quite frequently except when the exam dates are looming nearby. As regards tameness- some can be wild.

Oxford has some really good pubs (which are popular haunts of the students), as well as nightclubs (at least, when compared to Cambridge, though not to London). I don't know if frequenting pubs 4/5 times a week bodes well for your studies, but if you really want to, you probably could.

* What is the live music scene like?

Great.

Definitely. Oxford is lively at 0100, while Cambridge is sleepy when it is around 2000.

Yup I was going to say the same thing.

Here's a question - can you go to other colleges' bops? If so, do you have to be invited? I was thinking it might be nice to nose round a few other colleges (if, if, if).

My college MCR handbook says to catch the 24 hour coaches to London, for clubbing.

Seriously though, I've had no experience of the Oxford club scene yet so I can't really comment. However, I've spent many nights out in Cambridge over the past 3 years and the only place worth going to is the Junction on a Friday night. The best of the worst is an accurate description. Everywhere else is very disappointing. Honestly, it’s probably one of worst cities I’ve been to for night-life. Maybe I'm just too old for clubbing?

Generally yes.

I thought everyone knew Oxford was better for nightlife?

yer oxford is definately better - alot more going on - and i heard from a camb person that they have no official student nights? check with one of them..

oxford is no london, but it's good enough to get wasted pretty often and go clubbing and not get board. the zodiac is also simply awesome for live music, they get some really good bands for their size, and tickets are always well priced.

as for bops, some can b a bit boring, but there's always enough going on - and visiting others bops isn't just allowed, it should be enforced, i've had some great times. roll on this year's queer bop..

Yep - many colleges you need a ticket so you buy a ticket and woo you're in. At Jesus you'd just need somebody to let you in!

I'll (hopefully) be a Wadhamite, so yes, should be. My gay friends are already putting in bids for who gets to come with me

EDIT: Thanks Bekaboo

Oxford has the slight problem, though, that everywhere you go you meet Oxford students.

Hence the nightlife is inferior to that of the Better Place. :p:
