It depends on what you think is boring. Let's just say that it's not the student capital of Britain. Being from London, you'll probably find yourself with little to do and few places to go. How many years are you going for? It may be worth it. Only you can decide if you like the place or not.

Good luck.

I love Somerset - one of the most beautiful areas in the country - good cider too. Not too much to do though... cow tipping maybe:smile:
It could be boring, but then so could any university in any place in the world. It's up to you to find something new and interesting to do if you start feeling bored. There won't be as many bars and clubs as in London, but there will be far more coastline and countryside nearby. At the end of the day, if you need to go somewhere bigger, you're not too far from Bristol or Exeter.

Taunton is a sort of half-way point between Bristol and Exeter. Both are about one hour away from Taunton itself. There's plenty to do in Somerset/Devon/Avon if you look. Life doesn't end when you step outside of Watford, you know! :p:

Taunton's not exactly buzzing, but it does have some good clubs / pubs, and the drinks are fairly cheap too. SCAT's about 5 mins walk from the town centre which has the usual shops, but the cinema / bowling complex is on the otherside of town by the motorway, about 10 minutes drive from SCAT, traffic providing.
Are you going into private accommodation? because the halls are quite a way from the town and a bus ride away from SCAT, but taxi's back from town are relatively cheap. Exeter's about 45 minute train ride away, and admittedly does have a better night life, but Taunton's not too bad, and there are always plenty of jobs being advertised, so if you got really bored / needed the money then you would be able to kill time working.
i live here, went to Castle School which is just behind SCAT, PM with any specific questions. BUt in my opinion Taunton is a ****hole

Hello fellow Crawley person, Somerset is a very nice place from my understanding. Where abouts in Crawley are you?

I have attended school and college in Taunton for the last seven years, and am in fact embarking on another final year (this one at SCAT - art foundation) in september. Personally, having a natural yearning to be in the middle of things I feel bound to tell you that Taunton is not a very exciting place. However, that is not to say that there is absolutely nothing going on.

Culturally I think it suffers from not having any long-established University institution, and no sites of tourist interest. But while it isn't a thriving urban centre, it is nonetheless a busy county town with enough shops, pubs and restaurants for its inhabitants to get by with. Large names rarely play gigs in Taunton (although, I have to mention, Elton John did recently perform in town), but it has its own theatre and octoplex cinema, and its clubs offer various DJ acts and themed nights.

As it is still in Somerset, the area is not as rural and sparsely populated as many parts of Devon and Cornwall, and, as others have mentioned, it is within easy reach of Exeter and Bristol (my preferred city), as well as Bath and Cardiff if you're feeling more adventurous. Taunton is on the M5, and is also a routine stop on the major railway line between Penzance and Paddington, which makes getting to London much easier and quicker than you'd think: trains are regular and convenient, with the fastest services taking a mere 1 hour 50 minutes to get you to the capital.

All in all I'd say that there are many places in England that are more exciting than Taunton, but it is in no way totally dead. I hope that you enjoy your time there.
Taunton is a cultural wasteland,

Well in the town theres 3 main clubs- aura which is very rocky and got some good bands playing on thursday nights, but is most expensive for drinks. shout is much more cheesy/pop music and they have gay night on some weds which is a right laugh. on thurs is a gd place to be as is £5 entry including 3 drinks. dellas is at the other end of the town and i don't really go there much. ALWAYS either go to the perkin or coal orchard on a night out before for cheap drinks (is a wetherspoons). theres quite a few shops, but wot i'd say we're missing is a H&M- but theres regular and quite cheap trains and buses to exeter and bristol. u'l be fine in taunton if you're only there for 2 years. although i have heard that the SCAT halls are quite a way out of taunton (up near galmington i think). what course you doing?
PM if you want anymore help- its quite surreal to go on here and find so many people from taunton- i want to know who u all r now!!!

Don't worry loads to do down those parts.

He he.. yeah i was a bit shocked to find all these Taunton people on here - where have you all been hiding?!? Agree with you flyingpig - perkin is pretty wkd as is shout, however I dont "do" dellars, but thats just me. SCAT halls are further away than Galmington, theyre up by Staplehay I think.

that sounds quite good then thanx!
iv been to visit the halls and although i thought they looked a bit way out as they r pretty much in staplehay, i firstly dont really have much of a choice and secondly it wasnt as far from the town as i expected only about 10min drive and there are busses or I will just have to befriend somebody with a car lol

I live just outside of taunton in a village, but even that hasnt been too much of a problem. the cooks coaches buses are amazing- quite cheap and very reliable, but the First buses are expensive and old and horrible. the drivers are mostly polish and don't understand where you want to go when you ask for a ticket!!
beware in shout for all the old men who just stand around the outside watching everyone dance- perves!!

Thanx for that Iv been to visit twice n almost got run down by a bus cause you have to wave them to stop and u dont have to do that here although i live near to the town i never get buses so thats another new experience. can u get bus passes is that cheaper?
Reply 17
when i was studying at richard huish i got a bus pass which was £100 a term!! very expensive, but may be cheaper as you are travelling less distance than i did

Im going too!

from london

got offered a place at Canterbury institute of art and design, but it was for the 2 year art foundation course, and i wanted one year,so i chose SCAT.

now everyooooone is telling me ive made a mistake, but i liked the college,it had a nice atmosphere.

to be honest i'm a bit worried,i don't know much else about it,ive only been there once for the interview.

anyone know more?

SCATs got a really good reputation for arts. it just a bit of a joke in taunton cos u can also do A levels there but its rubbish (for A levels) compared to Richard Huish which i think is now officially the best college in the south west. but for an art foundation course u've made the right decision!!i know someone whos finished it and is now doing a photography degree, someone on a fashion degree and one of my best friends is starting the art couse as well this year so u'l be in good company!!
