Some of my pupils want to use phonetics beside the translation. Is this ok?

When you say 'phonetics', are you referring to actual, International Phonetic Alphabet phonetics?

Either way, it just sounds like they want a pronunciation aid. I can't see how that would do them any harm.

I feel like I need to know more information about what you're doing in the classroom... I had assumed you were teaching them a foreign language and they wanted the phonetic scripts in order to pronounce the foreign language better.

Is that what you're doing, or are you doing something else?

It is the past tense irregular verb in Irish. The pronunciation is not similar to what is written.
