Magnesium ions form a white precipitate with hydroxide ions (e.g. in NaOH), which is insoluble in excess hydroxide ions or ammonia. This is the same result as you'd get with Calcium ions, but Calcium has a bright yellow-red flame so you can differentiate between them like that.
Barium ions form a white precipitate with sulfate ions (e.g. H2SO4). They also have an awesome pale greeny-turquoise flame.
