talk about meeting up with him, dont suggest it directly but maybe say it'd be cool to and stuff, see what he says. you might be able to judge how into you he is by his reaction or willingness to hook up, even if you dont meet.

talk on the phone. Ive met some quality people online, I can have really long conversations with them, much more than my friends becasue its like 2 whole seperate places and different things going on. Its great!
And make him get a webcam if he doesnt have 1 or he might be 50+
But yeah just get used to talking on the phone first, a lot of people just find it very easy to talk to other online because you dont need to be yourself.

or have voice convos online, cheaper than phonecalls...i called my bf once, altho he lives in another country, and it cost me like a tenner. meh.
