I was pretty excited with my bargain purchase of an imac (OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks). When it was set up, I realised that it is extremely difficult to do anything useful with it unless I had all of the matching devices with it (iphone, itunes etc).

I currently have a Samsung note 3 along with an app called deezer which, with a monthly prescription, allows me to download pretty much any music you can think of but it does not transfer to mac like itunes does.

Long story short I am currently regretting my purchase, is it because I am a novice with the apple software or is it because you need to have all accompanying software apple?

You definitely don't need all apple devices to make the most of it! Having iTunes on it can be useful however. When i converted from pc to mac a few years ago I wasn't very happy for the first few days either, but then I got used to it, in fact so used to it that now I can't think about going back to windows. I'd say give it a few days, explore the system and you'll be just fine
