RSS01 Help requiredWatch
Just trying to find the best things to revise at the moment for RSS01.
The two topics I am going to choose are the question on Utilitarianism and Abortion & Euthanasia. Now Im just curious what are the main things I need to be learning?
From what I have gathered through looking at Abortion and Euthanasia it appears I need to look at Religious arguments against, Religious Ethical arguments against and then Secular arguments for and against. Anything else I should be adding on there? That may only be the first part of the question.
Secondly I am not quite sure what the main points I should be learning with regards to Utilitarianism.
All help is appreciated, Thanks guys
For the general questions:
principle of utility - greatest happiness principle
Bentham always, perhaps Mill
Maybe explain Act (hedonic calculus) Bentham and rule Mill
What he thought drove humans - hedonism
Principle of utility
hedonic calculus - quantitative
Principle of Utility
Rule - ( weak rule)
Qualitative - higher and lower pleasures
optional - principles of Universality, autonomy, justice
You need to know the strengths and weaknesses.
Then just learn a few ethicists to back up you points
e.g. If the question is : It is more important to increase pleasure than end pain and suffering. how far do you agree?
Karl Popper supported negative utilitarianism - it is better to reduce pain than increase pleasure.
Peter Singer said we agree more on what causes pain rather than on what causes pleasure.
Mill says it is not worth seeking lower pleasures.
Bentham says pleasure is the sole good, his hedonic calculus purely works out how to increase pleasure.
Also do you mind explaining the difference between AO1 and AO2?
