Portsmouth nightlife; some advice please!

Hiya, I'm going to be going to Portsmouth uni Sept 2014, and I was wondering about the nightlife in Portsmouth, o if someone could give me a lowdown on what each place is like, opinions, etc.

I live in Portsmouth, and starting in September.

I go out in Portsmouth most weekends, and the odd weekday.

You've got lots of cheap clubs and bars along guildhall which cater for pretty much everything.

There's also The Astoria with 4 floors of different music, enviroments etc (my fav).

Then 15 min walk from Guildhall, you've got Gunwharf Quays which is a bit more up market. There are a couple of bars and a Tiger Tiger but very expensive.

Overall, I think it's great. I've been out in Southampton, Bournemouth and a few towns and Portsmouth is by far the best out of them.

thanks very much for taking the time to answer with your advice! I am especially interested in checking out gunwharf quays. what do you make of tiger tiger, I heard it is really popular with the navy lads?

also is highlight still on? last I heard it was being taken over by grosvenor casino?

It depends where you come from, if you come from a big city, the night life won't be as good. That's not to say it isn't still fun!

Fuzzy Duck - Fine in freshers, watch out though, they give you VODKAT instead of vodka, it's only 22%
Astoria - Good place, only been a few times but they were good nights
Club 8 - it's ok, again, only been twice not a bad place, two floors
Popworld - Great place, cheapish, lots of fun
Liquid/Envy - The biggest club, not bad during the week for students but a bit chavvy at the weekend

Never been out in Gunwarf so I can't say.

Also, everywhere seems to serve Messer Schmitt, instead of Jager, even if you ask for a jager bomb. It's weaker at 22%.

All in all, great fun! :smile:

EDIT: Should add there are LOADS of bars and pubs around, especially on Albert Road, if that's your thing. They're always busy at the weekend.

Mondays at Tiger Tiger in Portsmouth is pretty much the only day it's worth going as it's students only; every other night it's full of old people :frown:

But in my opinion it is the best place.. but saying that I don't go out to these places any more :P

First years tend to stick to Guildhall walk but there's also Albert Road, which has loads of pubs and get's really busy especially at weekends, that's where I usually go out but I'm more of a pub person. Loads of students live around there too so plenty of students go out there. The Wedgewood rooms are also on Albert road which often have some pretty good bands. And like other people have said there's Gunwharf to but it's quite expensive. It does have good eating places though and bowling and cinema if you're looking for that kind of stuff. So there's plenty to do.

all of this is really great advice, especially the bits about cheaper variations cos they are lower in alcohol, sounds like they don't want us to party too hard!

Basically,
Monday - Tiger Tiger
Tuesday - Astoria
Wednesday - Popworld/Fleet
Thursday - Liquid and Envy
Friday - Lyberry and Astoria.

They're all your student nights. I never went out on a Tuesday but Astoria is pretty good so i'm sure it would be a good night. Also, Wednesday never went out but it's the social night so good night guaranteed. Monday, Thursday and Friday though had some amazing nights at all of them. Basically, wherever you go prices are pretty similar like £2.50 a drink, apart from tiger which is a bit more expensive but worth it! Pretty much, you'll have a good night anywhere as long as you're with the right people.
