B653 - Soldiers Family Pension Bill 2014 (Second Reading), TSR Opposition

    Soldiers Family Pension Act 2014

An Act to increase the aid given to the family of deceased soldiers

BE IT ENACTED by The Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Commons in this present Parliament assembled, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

    1. Definitions

    1. Pension shall be identified as the amount the soldier would have been entitled to, should they have served 18 years of regular service and lived until the age of 65.
    2. Killed in action shall refer to any soldier killed in the line of duty whilst on an active tour of duty, or during training exercises.
    3. Soldiers family shall refer to the immediate family of the soldier, to be limited in definition to their children, spouse at time of death and parents.

    2. Specifics

    1. In the event that a soldier or other member of the armed forces currently serving is killed in action or during training exercises, said persons family shall be entitled to receive the pension they would have been entitled to after having served for 18 years and living to the age of 65.
    2. This pension shall be divided equally between all eligible family members, who shall receive a share of the pension at the beginning of the tax year for the first 10 years following the death of the individual.
    3. This shall apply to all members of the armed forces, including the Army, the Territorial Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.

    3. Short title, Extent, Enactment, etc.

    1. This Act may be referred to as the Soldiers Family Pension Act 2014.
    2. This Act extends to the entire Untied Kingdom.
3 This Act will come into force immediately, following Royal Assent.

    Notes
The cost of such a move will have minimal impact on the greater scheme of the budget. Since the invasion of Afghanistan, for instance, 447 personnel's family would have been eligible. As the total pension would equate to around £33000 in the ten years (meaning £3,300 per year). This move would therefore provide support to the families of people who have sacrificed themselves for this country, whilst costing less than £10 million per year.

Still think the service term should be reduced by half to 9 years.
