‘Jesus came to suffer.’ Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. Refer to Mark’s Gospel in your answer.

ANSWER:

Some Christians agree, as Jesus stated so in Caesarea Philippi. When revealing his future destiny, he said 'the Son of Man will suffer, be rejected by elders, die and resurrect on the 3rd day'. By stating so, it shows that Jesus Christ readily accepted his destiny of suffering and rejection, therefore Jesus came to suffer.
Despite this, other Christians disagree, as Jesus Christ came to heal the sick. Jesus performed many healing miracles, such as the Cure of the Leper, Blind Bartimaeus & the Greek Woman's Daughter. Therefore, Jesus didn't come to suffer specifically, but rather came to heal those that were oppressed by disease.
On balance, I agree, as Jesus Christ said that 'the Son of Man has come ti give his life as ransom for many' This immediately shows that Jesus Christ came to save all of humanity from sin, and in order to do this, he knew and accepted the fact that he had to suffer- so Jesus Christ did come to suffer.
