Recovering from Tonsillectomy :(

Hi guys, I had my tonsils out on wednesday and was feeling not too bad at all weds evening and thursday, but today it has just hit me and I feel AWFUL :frown:.
I feel so dizzy that I am spending practically all day in bed, I can't eat anything because I feel so sick and today couldn't even keep my painkillers and antibiotics down :s:.....but this is just making me weaker. I know all of this is probably normal, but I just wondered if there was anyone reading this who has had a tonsillectomy or experienced similar symptoms and could give me any advice on how to feel better?
Thanks a lot ...and sorry about the details!xxx

Get well soon, I had mine out when I was five, on my birthday aswell. I know how you feel, you'll be better in a few days.

I feel for you, I suffered a similar thing. I had a bad reaction to either the anaesthetic or medication after my tonsillectomy which resulted in me violently vomiting every 4 or 5 minutes. After a day of this I had to go back to hospital and was told I had a paralysed stomach. I doubt its something like that, just keep drinking water so you don’t get dehydrated.

Good luck- it does get less painful. And the end outcome is worth it

Try to eat something, as hard as it may be. I've just had my wisdom teeth out and I had to force down yogurt so that my stomach was lined with something before I took Vicodin (woo for drugs!). Otherwise the painkillers will just make you feel sicker, or so the doctor person said. It really does help if you eat something. And remember to stay hydrated, you will feel even worse than you do now if you get dehydrated as well.

Feel better!

No it wasn’t very nice. But its now balanced out by the fact I haven’t had tonsillitis for 2 years.

You are meant to eat toast or something hard to scrape of all the ‘gunk’ from the back of your throat, but if you cant manage that eat something soft as dede suggested so you are not taking painkillers on an empty stomach.

I had mine out when I was 12 and I felt grotty for about a week afterwards, so I sympathise. :frown: I don't remember extreme sickness or vomiting or anything though, so you should keep an eye on that. What I do remember is stale blood and gunk in my throat for ages afterwards...yuck. As hard as it may sound, eating toast will significantly speed your recovery up.

Thanks for the advice on toast guys....I had some and it does seem to be doing the trick. I also feel less constantly dizzy due to having actually eaten something. Have stopped being sick too....think that was just a very bad day, possibly due to the anaesthetic finally wearing off or something? Am not in too much pain either....am taking 14 tablets a day from the hospital and they appear to be working! My ears and jaw hurt more than my throat though :s:.....any tips for relieving the pain there? Thanks!

I hope you feel better soon! My friend had her tonsils out a few years ago and said she felt quite dizzy and sick afterwards too. While she in the hospital afterwards, she went to the toilet but of course she still had to be connected to the machine to check her heart rate. She suddenly felt really dizzy on the way to the toilet; fainted; disconnected from the machine; and really scared her mum when the machine suddenly went dead!

Anyway- back on topic! Glad the sickness has started to subside- I'd say for the jaw pain you could perhaps apply a bag of peas, or an ice pack to your jaw.

I hope you recover soon, and it really will be worth it in the future!
