Broadgate Park - is it any good?

Hi guys,

so I applied for accommodation in Nottingham at Broadgate Park, but then i came accross this website http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/accommodation/broadgate-park/ and I became really worried about it. Is it really that bad? I haven't heard any bad things about it until I went on that website :s-smilie:

Seemed quite nice when I looked around it - all the rooms are fairly standard really, quite modern too, I think it was built quite recently. Location is good too, only a 10-15 minute walk from the Tesco Extra in Beeston (and other supermarkets), and you're right on the edge of the campus

I'm not sure if it's true, but I've heard a few saying they're full up and don't have any more rooms which aren't already allocated. So if you did want to go to Broadgate Park, probably should apply soon, just incase they've still got a bit of space

Most of the reviews on that site are a few years old and it seems to have improved in the last few years.

I've been living here just over a year and had a few problems - all of which they sorted really quickly.
I'm living in Broadgate Park at the moment and can't wait to get out.
First and foremost, the internet is absolute rubbish. It's very temperamental and often goes and returns as it feels. The wifi connection where I am is virtually non-existent so I've had to use a cabled connection.

Secondly, there is often only 1 or no bars of phone signal in my block which makes calling or texting people very difficult and if the internet goes down I can't use my 3g. This is a problem for everybody I have spoken to in my block, not just my own phone.
I've also come across, from when I moved in, a large number of silverfish insects walking around in my room and in the en-suite part which is quite disgusting.

Those are the main faults of the actual Broadgate Park premises. The other things that made it worse are down to the people in in. My room happens to be placed directly above the front entrance of the block. This means that I can constantly hear everything everybody is saying. On numerous occasions I've had exams and people have been just outside my block shouting and screaming their empty drunk skulls off until past 4am. I can also always constant smell cigarette smoke and weed seeping through my windows.

Lastly the walls in my block are, indeed, very thin. The person directly above me always plays his music very loud (the same song over and over again at 1am is enough to drive anybody insane!). The reception tell you to call them and they'll come over and fix it. There is, however, no signal.

The biggest problem about Broadgate Park is that a huge majority of students have a complete and utter total disregard for everybody else living there. Even as I type this I can hear some heavy bass coming from a room near me.

If you are a person who likes their sleep and likes to work in peace and quiet come exams. I would recommend that you avoid this place.

In terms of the people living there, surely they're no different on average from anywhere else?

To be honest I can't say for sure. I haven't lived anywhere else so I'm guessing it depends on the people that are in your block.
Speaking to my friends, they didn't have any major problems with noise but they were in different accommodation to me, so I wouldn't say that there are problems everywhere.

I'm also living in Broadgate Park at the moment and agree with what herothing11 has said. The phone signal & Internet are awful but the main thing that makes it bad is the people - pretty much every night you'll hear people coming back from a night out screaming their heads off. But I think this is something you get at all student accommodation.

If you have a problem like something breaking in your flat, Broadgate are pretty good at getting it fixed quickly. Some of the staff are really nice, some not so much.

I think that Broadgate is no better or worse than any other University accommodation. I would say it was better than the catered halls on campus - the rooms are bigger and nicer at Broadgate for the most part, and the catered food is nasty. Although I can't wait to move out next year, I think it's the best place for your first year. Some people have said Rayleigh park is better but I've also heard some bad stuff about there too. I don't think you need to worry. You'll probably get angry with some of the totally disrespectful people that you'll be living with, but that's a standard thing you have to deal with with all first year accommodation.
I was in catered halls on campus and from what I've heard it's the same in terms of noisy people and sleepless nights. (I did quite like the food though in halls). Yes you're living with a bunch of newly 'free' students wherever you stay in student halls so it's going to be noisy.

But I have friends who've loved Broadgate (most of them) because you're in flats and you can socialise and cook and it's not as planned out as catered halls. Sometimes if you get a crappy bunch of people in your flat it can be a bit depressing because you're stuck with them for the year.

Broadgate has an amazing JCR and plans a lot of things if you're into the student experience. Raleigh I think is smaller, so doesn't get quite as many opportunities, but it is in Lenton which is where most of the 2/3/4 year students live so it's got a cooler atmosphere than Broadgate which is in quieter Beeston.
Postgraduate fees are higher, is there really any difference except the duration of the contract? Are there separate buildings for PGs like they did in my previous uni? And it would be great if you know anything about studio rooms.
