Benzene and acidified potassium permanganate

I'm studying various reactions of arenes.. and I'm struggling to figure out how Benzene would react with acidified potassium permanganate! However I found this staement- 'the benzene ring can
activate the benzylic position of alkylbenzene toward oxidation
with strong oxidants such as KMnO4' ...can someone please explain this in simpler terms??

Benzene itself won't react with KMnO4, but some aromatic compounds will. The benzylic position is a carbon atom attached directly to a benzene ring, and this can be oxidised so long as there is a hydrogen attached to that carbon.
