hi just a quick question about this:

question paper:

http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/subjects...4-QP-JAN12.PDF

mark scheme:

http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/subjects...W-MS-JAN12.PDF

data sheet:

http://filestore.aqa.org.uk/subjects...-INS-JUN11.PDF

on question 6bi)

i drew my structure as:

H
l
C - C
ll l
O H

mark scheme says ignore all groups on right hand side? how do i know that the CH2 group should be on the left, on the data sheet its on the right.

also can someone tell me how to solve which fragment to use when there is overlap on the chemical shift values, e.g. for 6biii) RCH3 or R2CH2 how do i identify which to use?

thanks in advance

You're misunderstanding the mark scheme, the instructions are referring to the diagram drawn in the mark scheme not a candidates answer. You would get full marks for your drawing - you have a CH2 next to a C=O.

Lots of potential answers to this question. RCH3 will have an integration of 3, R2CH2 will have an integration of 2.
