How do you know if your confused?

There are a few people who seriously think im confused (as in mentally confused whatever that means) and I know they are serious because I have acted odd in front of them cause Ive always been the self conscious type and never know what to say. Im wonderig if they are right though I mean how can I tell if im confused or there is something mentally not right?

This is not really worth replying to but I post on TSR asking if its possible for me to tell whether im confused, or do others know better.

What would you be confused about? And I might add that TSR probably isn't the place to ask this question. It's likely to be very personal and certainly noen of us could give you a satisfactory answer! I'd see a GP probs.

You're confused if you're unsure of being confused. Well I wouldn't know what mentally confused is either lol....btw how have you acted odd? Those 2 thigns don't sound odd to me!

well im not very witty and never know what to say so I probably come across as a bit slow, also I used to attention seek a lot by doing weird things like climbing or scratching paint of things or something but at the same time I was seen as really quiet and had no social skills, now everytime I make a joke they don't know if im being serious or not.

Actually my post did have a point. The point is we as strangers can't really tell. And the fact you're even asking. Gah.

Autism, or related disorder?

Anyway, who cares what they think? This doesn't sound like the sort of personality trait you can suddenly snap out of by some sort of enlightenment, so no, you're not "confused" in any sense of the word that I know of. It sounds like it's just your personality and it will change as you grow, as will the rest of you.

Maybe, but when you think about it people who know you can only judge by the way you act (which in my case hardly ever reflects what im thinking etc) so you lot have as much chance of telling if im really confused as anyone else anyway, which is zero chance. Though I wasn't asking if you think im confused I was asking if there is anyway to tell..

I keep wondering if I have autism, but im now 20 so surely it would of been detected by now.
You could just be mildly autistic or suffer fro asperger's syndrome, both of which affect "normal" social interaction. Or you could just be poorly socialised for some reason...I say, were you ever kept in a dungeoun away from sunshine and people for a very long period of time, perchance?

Just go to the doctor if you think it's a problem and affects your life. If the only problem is people saying things then just ignore it and get on with it.

Its not really a problem its just like you said a few people see me as different or strange and the more they judge the stranger I act for some reason.

Well autism affects social interaction. Asperger's syndrome is milder (not a mild form of autism but generally has less severe effects than autism) but also affects communication and social skills. Unlike autism it dosn't affect your cognitive skills. It is really possible that you have just indulged your introverted nature to the expense of actively learning social skills. I also used to be like that - made worse by the fact that I had very little social interaction outside of my family due to overprotective parents - and am still naturally introverted but have had to learn to overcome it and learn how to be "normal" in social settings. Social skills are acquired, but make sure you don't end up killing your natural personality in order to fit in.

PS: I've always hated people who call others "strange". It's judgemental and they just have no imagination!

Erm, detected by who?

If you don't go and get yourself tested for an autistic spectrum disorder, we can only speculate... I mean, if a doctor sees you in the street, he/she isn't going to say "you're autistic, aren't you?", and if you go to your doctor about a sore foot or something they're not going to add to your problems. :p: If it bothers you go and find out. I wouldn't let it worry you though. I have Asperger's - my doctor didn't diagnose me, a psychologist (who I just happened to know, parent of one of my friends) gave me an informal diagnosis one day. I'm not bothered. :p:

If you feel comfortable with yourself and are happy with the way you behave, I don't think you should worry about people saying you're 'confused'. That's a very vague thing to say and I'm sure they must tell you reasons for it. As long as you are not hurting anyone I don't think there is anything wrong with being yourself. Let them say what they like. Only be concerned if YOU find anything worrying about your character or behaviour.

Ok thanks, hm not sure if my cognitive skills are ok are there any online test or anything lol? I got through school and college ok with average/just below average grades (B's and C's GCSE, C's and D's at A level) so it can't be all that bad.
Like you said its probably just a similar problem to yours, not having much social interaction as a child (I grew up an only child), congrats for overcomming it though:smile:

Well my parents said that I had to go to a speech therapist when I was 2 because I wouldn't speak, I nearly went to a special school but my parents wouldn't have it and put me in a normal school, even then I did weird things like not smiling then being embarrased if I accidently did, also I got embarrased if certain words or teachers names were said yet I wasn't diagnosed with anything so it musn't have been that bad, probably just part of the weirdness:redface: When I used to get into arguments with my mum to get revenge she always mentioned this saying that im not right and she always knew that I was 'abnormal'. I think that was just out of anger though, if there was something really wrong surely she would have done something about it or I would have found out before. Though like people have said it could be just mild, whatever it is lol!

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Nothing can be done to treat autistic spectrum disorders. If you're worried ask your GP, Asperger's Syndrome tests are apparently fairly simple... but personally I'd just read up about it (on Wikipedia or similar, or just google it) and see if it sounds like you and figure out what about you to change and what you don't want to and so on. It helped me.
