70% + is usually a first. You did well in that assignment.

I believe that percentages in the US may mean something different to those in the UK. For example, a pass at my University starts at 40% and anything less than that is a fail. Therefore the whole grading system must reflect this. So every percent in the UK grading system must be worth more.

Ninety to One Hundred percent: A+=97-100%, A=94-96%,and A-=90-93%
eighty to eighty nine percent: B+=87-89%, B=84-86%, and B-= 80-83%
seventy to seventy-nine percent: C+=77-79%, C=74-76%, and C-=70-73%
sixty to sixty-nine percent (not really a pass): D+=67-69%, D=64-66% and D-=70-73%
fifty to fifty-nine percent: Fail
0 to forty-nine percent: Fail
Science courses much the time the test are multiple choice. Most subjects have essay exams at lead in University.
