The French Republic has agreed to contribute over forty million Euros. It will help to modernise the signal system of the railway linking two major cities, Hanoi and Vinh City. This is a major part of a plan to modernise the Vietnamese railway system. While the system is in its current state, it is liable to accidents. We hope to prevent this as much as we can, hence our substancial contribution.

The French Republic will receive nothing in return; we are doing this for the goodness of the Vietnamese people. However, we do hope to strengthen our ties with our former colony.

France also thanks Israel.

Isn't it Vietnam where something happened like this once before - possibly even France that time, too - and some railway engines were donated and then left to rust because the tracks couldn't take them? While we applaud France's actions, we hope they won't be similarly wasted.

Australia is rather bemused that the French Ambassador has little to discuss about his country's achievements, such that he would have to resort to discussing the building of a railway system. :p: Nevertheless, we commend you for your munificence!

We are heartened to note this contribution. Vietnam has come a long way both economically and politically, and is one of the most promising developing nations in South-East Asia. We commend France for its commitment to international development.

Modern imperialism?
I was waiting for someone to say that... and why am I not surprised that it came from the DPRK rep? This is not imperialism - the French have no incentive to imperalise in this age.

With the future prospects for Vietnam looking quite solid - cheap labour, exports and expected membership of the WTO in sight - North Korea cannot help but remain a little sceptical. France seems to making quite the come back on the world stage - what with leading the peacekeepers in Lebanon and all.

Currently, we are donating forty million Euros; this is a little more than 'some railway engines'. This is part of an ongoing plan to modernise the Vietnamese railway system which includes replacing old tracks. We intend to ensure that this plan is completed fully, that our donated money is put to correct use, as well as planning to monitor the situation after the system has been refurbished with more donations if necessary.

France has no intent to go back to the days of imperialism. Although the UK Representative does not speak for us (), we echo his statement.

Why can North Korea not help but remain a little sceptical? The French Republic is just doing its bit for our former colonies.

Denmark applauds the efforts of France and hope such an act was not to "compensate" for its wrong-doings in Vietnam.
