BOOKs for 1st year Pharmacy students

Hi,

I will be studying Pharmacy this October and I'd like to prepare myself for the course by buying the required text book now ( i know its bit early, but i'm working atm and hardly have time to do anything thing else and would be too late for any preparation at the end of Sept). What books and where would you recommend me to buy the text books??

I've looked at Amazon, the link for ';My top 10 Pharmacy books' is as follows:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/2W06Z8BI4P0W1/026-8343557-6834863?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Are they all useful???

Any help appreciated, thanks:smile:

I will be (hopefully) studying in LSOP btw

The usual advice is to wait as it is only usually neccesary to buy one or two texts, and you will only actually know which once you get there and suss out the library situation, and which you use a lot.

Don't buy any yet. I'm not sure about LSOP but in our first year we were given a BNF and an MEP, which are vital books.

For the rest wait unitl you get there ... see what lecturer's recommend ... go get them out of the library ... see if you like the style they're written in ... wait a while and if you're using them frequently and there's only a couple of copies in the library meaning you have to wait for them, then buy them.

Stupid question, and not quite related but does the BNF/MEP you use have to be in date. I've got a drug tariff, MEP and a BNF, but all around a year old...and not sure whether to take it or see what happens...!

Reply 5

Same here. I have got the most current BNF but my mep is years old

Reply 6

i think the BNF is updated every 6 months...

Reply 7

yeah BNF is every six months, Oct and March I believe. Drug tarriff is every month.

... and both can be accessed free of charge online. BNF is at www.bnf.org, not sure about drug tarrif. I think you have to register for both but its free and you get up to date info.

I would actually wait before rushing out and buying any books. You will usually get a recommended list of books to buy, but i didnt buy any books in my first yr. All I bought was the BNF and the MEP was given to us. Textbooks are quite expensive and theres no point in buying them until you know you actually need them. Besides, Borders usually do a 20% off all books in October for students so you can get books for much cheaper!

i just wanted to know how much chem is actiually in paharmacy..i know like 90% is chem but if you got a B at A level would you still cope with level of chemistry and is it really complexed?

You will get the BNF and MEP guide at uni. Get the pharmacology book by rang, dale and ritter if you can, as that will be useful for a few years. You also will not need to get this yet, but the pharmaceutics book by aulton is very useful. For the future, say 3rd year, clinical pharmacy and therapeutics will be a useful book.

As for BNF - surely most unis have free online access to it via Athens?
