scale and map

Hi,

I posted a while ago, however the workings out I was given/told gave me incorrect answers..

Could someone please explain how to work out each question..

A scale on a map is 1:250000. What does each distance represent? Answers in Kilometers.

a) - 1 cm

b) - 10 cm

c) - 4.6 cm

d) - 0.2 cm

A scale on a map is 1:5000000. What does each distance represent? Answers to be in centimeters or millimeters.

a) - 50 km

b) - 5 km

c) - 100 km

d) - 60 km

I just to know how to work each one out.

Thanks.

The scale is 1:250 000. This means that the real distance is 250 000 times the distance shown on the map.

If you have a distance of 1 cm on the map then the real distance is

1 cm x 250 000 = 250 000 cm = 2 500 m = 2.5 km.

If scale is 1:250000 then that means that 1 cm on the map represents 250 000 cm on the ground=2500 metres=2.5 km.
i.e. each cm on the map represents 2.5 km on the ground
For the reverse process, with a scale of 1:500000, since each cm on the map would represent 5 km on the ground it follows that each km on the ground would be represented by 0.2 cm on the map.
