Am i being religious?

Hi guys, I'm borned in a buddhist family so i basically am one b'cus most children who come from a buddhist family will follow their parents path. My family isn't strict buddhists but we still do follow those great teachings(respect ect) and so do i. I'm not a typical strict buddhist but still stick to one rule - I DO NOT EAT BEEF.

So after all, do u think i'm a very religious person? I would like to know what people think of me having this "rule" in my mind. Thanks

I can't see why the question needs answering. But many people are brought up not eating certain foods and do not choose to eat them when they're older e.g. I wouldn't eat dogs or snails but in many cultures that would be okay: but thats due to upbringing eating habits and not really any religous relevance. I imagine you may feel the same.

Well, one of my friends is Buddhist, though he eats meat and has drunk alcohol, though he doesn't usually as he just doesn't like it, which violates the 5 precepts according to interpretation of me and my other friends who have studied RS. What he told me was that there are more versions of the religion than you can count, lots of different sects who do their own thing as it's not a centralised religion. I suppose the answer is do you feel religious? Do you want to be? Just following certain rules as convention doesn't make you religious, you have to be with the mindset and BELEIVE in it.

How exactly do you view these rules in your head? Personally I am not religious but am vegetarian and vowed never to smoke anything. My resolve on both these has gone through weak points, though I have never broken them because of some subconscious override in my head somewhere(These are both choices I made solely for myself). Is it anything like that? Or do you feel that violating the rules is wrong because of the religion you think you follow?
No offence but... who cares? Why is this an important question? You don't eat beef. Fine. You're not a strict Buddhist. Fine. Why must people always label themselves? It honestly doesn't matter why you don't eat beef, point is you don't.

I do PARTIALLY believe in it: It's really hard to describe. I don't normally believe in spirits or god, but when i'm in a funeral or in a temple or somewhere we normally see lots of people praying i'll believe it!! I don't drink alcohol, not because of being a buddhist, it's because i don't like it as it's not good for us and it'll make me fat:p: I basically get so used to behave well to everyone and everyting (that's in the teaching) and many people think i'm BORING:frown: .
Im in exactly the same situation as you except my family is muslim. We pretty much never go to the mosque except if stricter relatives come. And I dont eat pork or drink. But anything else like going out with people etc I do. The pork and alcohol isnt really religious, its just been conditioned into me and as Ive never had them I dont feel any urge to start now
I'm a full vegetarian and I don't consider myself religious.

It doesn'treally matter whether you're religious or not. All i will say is that as long as you are confident about who you are, then there isn't a problem.

Religion is all about individual belief, rather than practice. (Although practice is an important part of religion, belief is central to it.) And some things are just cultural.

All I cn say is that you should be happy about who you are.
