Hi.

Now I've been told songs are a lot like poems, if you can write poetry then you can write songs. Of course writing songs that are any good is another matter...

Anyway, my friend thinks poems have to be poetic and that, by association, songs must be poetic and she only listens to those kinds. I think this lyric is genius:

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away

My friend however would say 'that's not very poetic' and not think it was good...she would prefer something more poetic, yet in my eyes, less emotive.

My questions therefore are:

1. Does a poem have to be poetic?
2. Should a song be poetic?
3. Do you listen to poetic songs with lots of imagery or songs like the one above, using everyday, familiar phrases and moments?

Thanks. The song was written by Prince and is Nothing Compares 2 U.
