Another good place to look for info is the united grand lodge of englands website for the official view rather than the wiki entry which is not approved. just type ugle in to a search engigne and it should come up. I think to sum it up in one sentence its about " making good men great men". Unlike other charitable orginisations freemasonry teaches its members morals through allegorical plays or rituals as they are more commonly known. I love it and it appeals to men wanting to better themselves and those with a sense of " pomp and circumstance. After all that waffling if your no clearer all I have to say is that it means diffferent things to different people!!! And of course always remember if you want to be one ask one.

Previous to my earlier post this seemed quite a good explanation that I found on another forum I post on.
The mission of Freemasonry is to promote a way of life that binds like
minded men in a worldwide brotherhood that transcends all religious,
ethnic,
cultural, social and educational differences; by teaching the great
principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth: and, by the outward
expression of these, through its fellowship, its compassion and its
concern,
to find ways in which to serve God, family, country, neighbors and
self."

oh and ps we're not tossers lol

I must confess I really don't understand it, but I was always under the impression it was a load of frighteningly right wing intellectuals. It's one of those very obscure and clouded things that I can't find a straight definition of.
