Clinically Obese

Hey guys

Sorry to be a pest but I really need some advice. Here is my situation

I am a girl, 5ft 6 and I weigh 14 stone.

Because everyone in my family is big boned, I have never really had a problem, I don't eat that bad so I just dealt with it.

However recently i went to my doctor with migraine problems and chest pains. I also have a history of heartattacks and diabetes in my family. My GP said that it is because of my weight. The nurse also said that I am obese. I would never have used that term to describe me, overweight yes, but not obese. I wear size 16/18 in clothing, and now I feel I need to do something.

I have always wanted to lose weight, i was picked on at school for, but because of my personality no one would say anything to me now but my mum. She always calls my fat and says I need to lose weight.

I have decided that I want to lose weight for myself no one else, so that my health will not suffer in the long run. In the past I have tried numerous diets, none of which have worked.

Can anyone help me out.

I know I need to diet with exercise, but to be honest I can't really afford gym membership, it is too expensive where i live, but I like swimming, although I am conscious of being in a cossie....as for diets, or good foods to eat I need a lil help

I would suggest weightwatchers. The hard part is keeping it off after, but it should enable you to control what you are eating without cutting out certain foods and in a manner you can maintain if you try hard enough. Good luck

About £3 a week or so. Make sure you get one of the offers so you don't have to pay regisration.

If I were you, I wouldn't do this on my own. If you're clinically obese and you feel that you eat healthily, that means you don't really understand what you're doing wrong. It might help to talk to a specialist ("dietist" in Dutch, I'm afraid I don't know the English word for it, but it's someone who advises people with their diet). This person will be able to give you practical advice as well as moral support.

And if you really don't eat that much, the main problem is probably your lack of excersize, so work on that! Running is excellent for your health, and completely free. You could also get yourself a second-hand squash racket and play against a wall, which would be very cheap. Swimming also sounds like a good idea, because it's good for your muscles and makes you feel wonderful. Don't worry about how you look in a suit; the first few minutes of stepping out are difficult, but once you get into the water you stop feeling self-consious and the next time will be easier already. That should be a wonderful way of building your confidence.

Finally, for GOD'S sake get your mum to stop telling you you're fat. Once you're working on it there is not much more you can do, and telling someone they're fat when they're trying to lose weight is just cruel.

go do excercise, it doesnt matter that much what you do but obviously varied is best

sit ups
star jumps
running
swimming

and do it hard. make yourself out of breath and covered in sweat from it at least every other day.

if you don't lose a noticeable amount of weight i will pay for you to have liposuction

Karennerak, i understand what you mean by a dietrician, but i dont think they are cheap here, and I am only a student..i'm definetely going to do swimming because i used to enjoy doing it..

I will definetely let you know how i go on....

Edit - I followed the columns across rather than down - still puts you in the obese category though...

That gives you a BMI of 31.6.

Healthy is taken to be a BMI of 20-24.9 (unless you are of Asian decent, then the scale is 18-24.9).

25-29.9 is over weight.

Above 30 is obese.

your maxiumum healthy weight, based on your height is 11 stone. If you are athletic and work out lots, this is slightly more contentious as muscle weighs more than fat.

Can i just say that the link for the bmi calculator isnt a great one. I've been dieting all summer and lost half a stone mainly through going running. Once you start its great-take music! But that calculator showed my bmi about 8 points higher than any others such as NHS or BBC and i'd stick with the NHS personally!

Erm - it works it out to the same calculation - BMI = weight in kgs / [height in meters squared] - with a conversion factor for calculating imperically. How can they vary?

that BMI calculator gives me exactly the same BMI as every other calculator I've used.

If you ask your gp she should be able to give you a gym subscription. I have one of these and it makes it alot cheaper.

Can't you get your mum to pay?:wink:

At least be sure you're not doing it alone. It's usually good to have support from someone you know, but I know from personal experience that it can be the type of thing you don't really want to talk to friends and family about. So if you can't go to a dietrician (ha! Learnt a new word!), be sure to talk about it on here, and maybe also go to a special website for people losing weight, who will show an interest in your developments.

It's not always nice to have people paying attention to something that is uncomfortable and maybe embarrassing for you, but it's always good to have someone who will kick your (virtual) ass when they notice that you seem to be falling off the wagon.:biggrin:
