It says to email the secretary of your admissions tutor if you have a problem

MINE DOESN'T HAVE A SECRETARY.

It was working for me anyway, but I got another email yesterday saying that they'd fixed it. Not that it matters, because I've applied for 2011 entry & therefore none of this information applies until next January :p:

On that note, is there anyone else in this forum who has an offer for deferred entry at St John's? I haven't come across anybody yet, and I feel lonely :frown:

I wanted to restart this thread seeing as your last post is proof that there is ABSOLUTELY NOBODY IN THE WORLD deferring entry. You will be the only person in your year

Oh, it seems we have a comedian in the thread. :p: Okay then, I suppose I'll just have to make friends with all of you scary second years once I get there. I dare you to ignore me.
Well assuming your course is 3 years, as mine is 4 years we will graduate at the same time if that makes you feel any better! Cos im sure alot of the engineers, architects and medics will need more friends when all the 3year course folk leave. Maybe you could start a thread for every1 who will graduate in 2014. i think you may have better luck finding people.
That's the same for me actually, although I get to spend my third year in a random country doing whatever I want ;D

My course is four years too, because I'm studying languages

Hi Guys~
I did not take Biology for my A-levels.
And now, I find myself really interested in Biology.(cell bio, biomech, neuroscience, information and computing theory in biological system...lol)
What shall I do..?
As an aspiring Engineer, thinking about "Eng for Life Science(as well as Aero)" at Cam, I thought studying some Biology might not be too bad, and I want to broaden by General Knowledge as well!...

Should I buy an A-level textbook? or should I just buy a good textbook such as Essential Cell biology by Bruce Alb (recommended for NatSci)?...Textbooks on Bioengineering by CUP also look really interesting...

And do I need to study Chemistry as well?(chem essential for Bioloy, from what I heard)..

Please, help any NatSci at Johns, Bio engineers or anyone ..~! I would appreciate helpful comments.
I am not too sure about requirements for Natsci, but as far as i am aware, not having biology to study engineering at cambridge should not make a difference as it is a general course - many people apply withoutknowing where they want to end up so it is only physics and maths (+further) which are really essential. however i know that to study chem eng, through engineering you must have an A level in chem.

As for Natsci (biological i am guessing) so long as you have chemistry and preferably maths you should be alright if you dont have biology.

So basically if you are interested in biology, then find books which interest you and read them; as far as the interview is concerned you would gain much more insight into biology from reading a book such as the one you suggested rather than an A level textbook. You will also have needed to have read extra 'further reading' to help your application so the more you can read the better.

Which A levels are you taking?

Not a bio engineer, but biology is rarely required for anything and I don't think any of the current first years studied it. Chemistry is the one you tend to need for bio stuff

As for brushing up on it, go to a book store that stocks textbooks and flick through a few yourself. It really depends on what your trying to do, so pick something that fits as reading up on general biology is very different to grinding through biological methods.

I actually found the biographical/historical books on engineering projects as useful or more useful than any of the actual textbooks; page after page of theory is all very well, but worth nothing without context.

I am still confused... So you reckon I should study chemistry?
I guess buying an A-Level Chemistry Textbook would be the safe way.
Unless there are some Chem Textbooks better than A-Level...lol..
MIT uses Chemical Principles(P.Atkins) and Biological Science(S.Freeman) for their introductory courses...

It might be easier for us to give you more directed support if you could tell us which AS(?) levels you are currently studying, and your ideas on what you want to study at uni. e.g. engineering or NatSci?

What subjects are you studying/intend to study?

What subjects are you studying/intend to study?

Well, I am studying Maths, Further maths, Additional Further maths, Physics.
I intend to study some science subject (Bio/Chem), in my own time, if that makes sense.
I am going to read engineering, obviously...
I am not worried about any "requirement" studies for my eng course at Cam.
I just thought that, as someone going to study science, I might as well have some more background on it.

MIT, which is the best Uni for Eng, as well as the place I want to go for my Ph.D, has a general requirement policy which makes all the freshers take science courses (Phy,Bio,Chem) whatever they are reading during the first terms... I was inspired by that, basically.

Any Answers?
Sorry, i must have forgotten. Basically if your applying for engineering then just read biology that you're interested in. It also probably wont play a big part in your application either unless you somehow link what you have read to some aspect of engineering. So with that i mind once again there is no point in getting an A-level text book - just buy what you find interesting.

As for chemistry, if you can do it i would; as i know that geoff parks (head of admissions for Cambridge and also an Engineer) once said when someone asked about studying Maths, further + physics, that it would be 'getting away with relatively little' and that although the offer would only be for 3 a levels, you should study 3 distinct different subjects.
So are you in AS atm then?

Ahm...I got an offer from St John's college to study Engineering...
lol..
I just wanted to study some more subjects in my free time.

Oh right, im sorry; i've not quite been myself this past week; congrats.

If i were you i would use your free time to socialise... its not like we have much longer left to have a choice of a social life... tehe.
(i've been thinking about the whole 48hr week thing recently - thats alot of time spent studying!!!!)
