Caught with notes in my exam

I was in my exam the other day and was completely oblivious to everything at the time as I was focused on siting my exam.

Anyway, as I was walking to my exam, I was going through my notes briefly and ended up putting them in my pocket as I had nowhere to put them. They were fairly chunky notes but I thought it be best to put them in my hoody.

As I was getting into the exam hall and was preparing myself, I completely forgot that I had my notes as my hoody is baggy and it slipped my mind.

Halfway through the exam, I needed the toilets and escorted by the invigilator. At the time prior entering, she asked me to empty my pockets and as I was doing so, remembered I had notes and without hesitation handed them over explaining I had no intention of using them.

Unfortunately it got noted for academic misconduct and I really did not have any intention of using my notes.

It was just stupidity on my part and I was so focused on my exam that I completely lost sight of myself and surroundings.

I have not yet had my meeting and am fretting as to expect the worst case scenario.

Can someone please advise?

I have never cheated in my exams before and never had this problem and am unsure how to come up with a defence for this when writing my letter.
Wow, that must've been an awful feeling when you realised. :frown:

Perhaps you could get your teachers to testify to the fact that you're not the kind of student who would do that? If I were you I'd really feel the need to speak to whoever makes the decision face to face so they could see I would genuinely never dream of being so stupid, but I guess that's not a possibility? :dontknow:

Either way, I wish you the best of luck with your appeal.

Could you explain that if you genuinely did want to cheat you would not have put them in your pockets which you knew would be checked i.e. you would have hidden them in your trousers or something.

Just tell the truth, exactly as you've told us. When you have your meeting just be calm and explain the situation clearly and show that you are sad/ upset. If you do well in the subject/ have mock papers etc maybe you could bring these out/ speak to your subject teacher. IF you are a good student then they could help you and explain to the person who you have the meeting with that you would never do such a thing. Don't make anything up in an effort to sound more convincing just tell it as it is. If you have sat exams there before try and bring this up and say you have never ever cheated and explain that this was just a genuine mistake. Maybe even get your parents involved and they could explain how you were so distressed afterwards and beating yourself up so badly when you came back.

loool 4 years ago how did u even find this thread, still i wanna know the outcome the suspense has been building for too long
Well you're kind of screwed my friend. If they don't fail you for that exam or all the exams, you'll be very lucky. Anyway I think trying to explain that to them should be the best way, but definitely admit to having them there otherwise any denial at all apart from use of them to cheat will go down badly.
