Surely you can just ask him?

MSN, Skype if he is going to have a lappy or is going to be able to log onto a computer every now and then.

my boyfriend is always working abroad and the best ways to keep in touch i find are texts and emails. a little text here and there can cheer you up so much if your missing him, especially in the first few weeks! calling can be expensive but if you buy special cards specifically for the country you are calling (easily bought from the post office) you can call at a really cheap rate e.g my boyfriend is currently in Germany and i can call a landline there for 1p/min or his mobile for 10p/min (bear in mind that if his phone is 'roaming' it will also charge him) i personally prefer lots of texts and the odd phone call!just because i can never be bothered writing massive emails!

Thank You VERY much for your reply and you seem to be talking fro experience, so ;-)
will try the phone-card idea n messaging. (I agree with he emails n letters take quite a while to get there so that wouldnt really count as communicating I think)
Anyways, thanx again and all the best with everything;-)
My boyfriend's been away for a few weeks now, and the loveliest thing he's done to stay in touch is to send me postcards.

Somehow it's even nicer to have something handwritten. Problem is, they take days and days to get there...

If he brings his UK mobile, you can generally text him at the same rate as it costs if you were both in the UK, or even free if you have free messages, But it costs him the roaming rate, which can be quite expensive, to text you.

txts during the day, but writing once in a while is nice for that extra personal touch
Receiving a hand written letter once in a while does wonders! Nice to know someone sat down and actually took the time to write it and then post it, and you can put so much more feeling and emotion into it, and it's something to keep.

On the subject of mobiles and text messages, your boyfriend would be very thick to hold onto his UK handset for four months abroad, the cost is unbelievable. Sending messages to an international phone doesn't generally cost much though (a few pence above the UK rate, depending on your network), and you might be able to get some sort of deal bolt-on thingy to lower the cost.
If your gonna call him daily Letters are a mute point
Cause what are you gonna talk about on the phone when every thing is wrote in a letter.

i'd say, Net, Webcam - there for you see him.

My mate (similar situation) writes her boyf a letter every day but then saves them and sends them in a batch of a week or 10 days so its not as expensive and gives him something to look forward to. Also she includes lil cute pressies like if she had a pack of sweets that he likes she sends him one of each flavour.
The odd hand-written letter is nice because it takes time to write and shows that the other person has devoted that time to you.

Look at the cheepest ways to call/ text.

My boyfriend is on holiday for nearly 4 weeks (I know not that long compare to you) but his staying in two countries. one of them it's fine to call him the other he said I'll have to send him a text and he'll call me back and that will work out cheeper for both of us. The other option is using skype. From my skype I phone his skype which is diverted to his work mobile which costs me nothing and his company 30p a minuet!
Well its possible to be in touch with all those ways you mention, emails are free so you could regulary write that way, the odd phone could shouldn't be too costly.
