It depends on the company. Bear in mind that even with protected NCB you will still have to declare any accidents, which will push your premium up anyway. I recently read an article that came to the conclusion that if you make one claim in 5 years you save a little money with protected no claims, but it's marginal at best.
Most companies allow you to protect your NCB from 3 years onwards.
