How the hell does this work?? (city firms)

So practically all city firms recruit 2 years in advance, so for example if you had already started the GDL and applied to one of those city firms, the offer you would get is in September in two years time, which would be one year after you finish the LPC

This means EVERYONE applying for TCs in their GDL year needs to take a gap year after the LPC?

Or do people on the GDL without city TCs just never get one???
Sometimes firms have gaps they need to fill for the next year so it is possible to get a TC whilst on the GDL then go straight to LPC then firm.

Not all firms recruit that far in advance, but the majority do.

Law students apply in their second year for TC's, whilst non law students usually apply in the final year of their degree. Those on the GDL would have to take a 'gap year' after the LPC, yes. OR they can do the LPC part-time over two years.

A lot of students use that 'gap' to travel.

OK, so why does the institutions offering law conversion courses like Uni of Law etc have so many career events and during the GDL for city contracts and sells itself by connection to the large law firms, most people should have already gotten the TC right?

Not really. Although the number of people doing the LPC reached near equilibrium with the number of TCs (2012/3 5,673 LPC starts 5,302 training contracts) there is a big overhang of LPC graduates. As recently as 2008/9 there were 10,933 LPC starters but in the following year there were only 4,874 training contracts commenced.

There is a suggestion that with the pick up of the economy the oversupply problem is re-starting. For the 2013/4 academic year 13,850 people enrolled with the SRA. Effectively these are people who obtained clearance to do the LPC, though in the event only 5,198 started the LPC. 13,850 is the highest number since records began. Previously the highest number was around 11,000 in 2007/8 and the number was down to around 6000 by 2011/12.
yea that's generally how it works b0ss
