Further Maths GCSE help on this question please!!

I know the answer to question a is 2/5n but I don't know why.

"a) You are given that m : n = 2 : 5
Write m in terms on n.

b) You are also given that a : b = 10m : 3n
Work out a : b where a and b are integers."

Please explain it to me in laymans terms :smile:

So if m = 0.4n, 10m = 4n, so the second ratio boils down to 4 : 3. Then you just apply the method from the first section.

Thanks but I still don't understand it.

I know this working is wrong but here is my current understanding:

2m = 5n
m = 5n/2

You need to understand what a ratio is. It is basically equivalent to a fraction. i.e. the ratio 2:3 can also be expressed as a fraction 2/3 (this is what I do for ratio questions, anyway). For your problem:
m : n = 2 : 5
Expressing them as fractions gives:
m/n = 2/5
And then you can sort that out and the answer pops out.
