What can you get charged for by the police for running away and not paying cab fare?

Ok my mate was telling me today how he ran out the cab and didnt pay the fare. He realised later on he told the cab driver where he came from, and his information and address can easily be found, through this. Hes ****ting it quite hard tbh. Hes a good lad, hes just quite skint in life and didnt have the cash to pay (about £60). Ive told him not much could happen.

Could they actually charge him with anything or even fine him or something?

It's stealing isn't it? He wasn't given a service and didn't pay for it.

yeah thats what I thought first of all.

Like walking out of a shop when you've got the food swiped

its a civil matter for unpaid taxi fares but he should get away for it.....

we used to do it all the time at uni (well at the end of term anyway when we turned poor!! even paid by euros once) never had any problems lol

I got cautioned for it after my mate got rugby tackled by the police.

Don't think you can be charged, because I was pretty pissed and annoyed the police woman no-end - so she would have done all she could to me, which included chucking me in the back of the van

Morally what your friend did was wrong. It's like walking into a shop, taking something and thinking it is OK, because you can't actually afford it.

He will probably get off scot-free, but I wouldn't advise he does it again. I've had disputes over the price of a fare before, which is fair enough. But you should negotiate. You don't get into a taxi knowing you can't afford to pay. It's worth haggling a set-price before you get in. Common sense tells you to do that.

Yeh i told him it was a bit of a plonk thing to do, but to be fair the guy is having some money problems. He hardly comes out anymore as he cant even afford it.

Getting a job would be simple, youd think.

Running down a T road probably didn't help.

+ the fact that it was a nice area and the only way into the gardens was over 8 foot gates didn't help.

i would love to know because i wouldnt mind trying this some time lol
£60???
How far was your friend travelling?? The dude should have got the bus, or stopped at someone's for the night to get a bus in the morning.

My friend nicks stuff from TopShop and H&M quite a bit, but they are huge corporations, and, in TopShop's case, overcharge on their rubbishy quality clothes anyway. They can afford some nick-age, and their shop assistants will still get paid the same. I wouldn't do it, but my friend is risky like that (she blagged me 50p off my cheesy chips last time we went into town , not something I'd have the confidence to do, although she was drunk at the time!).

With cab drivers however, that's a bit more personal, it's their actual *wage* that you're depriving them of. Unfortunately I doubt they'll catch him. I hope he won't take that as reason to make a habit of it.

shot if you run too fast...............

heh, it is wrong as its stealing - even though our driver was a **** and we ended up giving him about 50 quid for a 20 pound fare.

The police did say I'd get charged if I did it again though...

Nice one, I bet that money comes straight out of the drivers pocket. Wonder how many hours it took him to earn that amount? Yeah, your friend is a "good lad".

What can you get charged..? Id say bad karma.
I can just picture your friend leaping out of the taxi and running off. For some reason the thought makes me smile

I'm also quite in interested in knowing how he managed to outrun a taxi.
You can actually get charged with fraud from running away from a taxi without paying. I'd say your mate could be in a lot of trouble if the police catch up with him.

i'm sure the driver will be 'quite skint' as a result.

like someone else said, if he doesn't get caught hopefully he will get a spot of bad karma.
