In my revision guide it says you can get ethanol from cracking large molecules of petrol gases(which contain ethene) in higher boiling fractions of crude oil---- i don't understand how you can get ethanol from this especially as you are cracking ethene?
if anyone could help i appreciate it

You can crack long chain alkanes and form shorter chain alkanes and alkenes (including ethene).

You can take the ethene and react it with steam in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst and make ethanol.

But your notes are wrong to suggest you can go straight from an alkene to an alcohol. Where would the oxygen atom come from?

yh it talks about dehyrdration as well so do the two methods combine , so you hydrate the ethene first and then crack it

Cracking of long chain saturated hydrocarbons produces ethane which can then be reacted with steam to make ethanol

Watch out for the autocorrect... it'll turn ethane into ethane.

Just like that.
