Depends on the programme really! Some throw you in at the deep end, some build on familiarity.

I can only speak for where I am, and at UEA they try and give you the familiarity initially, taking information present in all A Level syllabuses and building on it - quite quickly in retrospect! Physical chemistry is a lot harder than organic and inorganic which were both a nice, gradual build up to higher level information. To the point that I didn't even realise I'd learnt so much until it came to my exams! But physical while familiar, built up a lot more rapidly - and as someone not overly confident with maths I found that difficult (and a lot of people found that easiest. Everyone has their strengths & weaknesses).

The hardest thing for most is the transition from an occasional 'lab' to 7+ hours a week in a lab.
Sheffield break you in gently in terms of knowledge required for the lectures, but they throw you in at the deep end in terms of how long you spend in labs.
