Hall would cost you £100 per week? £14 per day? That's an awful lot - the equivalent at Merton would be £64.
I struggle to see what you're spending £2k on (a new high-spec latop each term?), but whatever.
I do think its extreme actually. Its 25% over even Oxford's top estimate and 60% over their 'minimum', an estimate that itself is notorious for being excessive (£255 per week for food minimum? Wtf are they on). Admittedly you've got 6 extra years of inflation on me, but i spent only just over that amount in my first three years, and i wasn't especially frugal.
So i guess you've just got too much money. Whatever will you do.
I meant £2k for the whole year - and probably all 4 years! A MacBook, and all the other bits and pieces etc
At Univ breakfast is £3.25, lunch is £4.80 and dinner £4.8, that's just under £13 without any formal hall or eating out!
Personally I do think it is an awful lot thinking about it, and hopefully I'll arrive and find I actually only spend £50 a week on food and for the whole year only spend £7k including accommodation etc!
Drinking, socialising, club memberships, evening entertainments, tickets, travel The list could go on- student life is going to be relatively cheap in comparison.
Well 8 weeks is more than I'm intending to do
Fair enough!
I feel that is not quite the right attitude you should have.. But, it's your degree!

Breakfast is the biggest difference. That's one expensive breakfast.

Unless you go utterly crazy that will be the case i assure you.

If that's your actual opinion then you're very out of touch with reality. For a student, that is an incredible amount and anyone who has that available is very lucky.
It's the same **** for all the low income students at big colleges. My sister (@catz cambridge) had a new macbook in the first year, went on holidays to different continents every year etc etc. They give what, a £5k grant + 3k high achiever grant or whatever? They always end up rich
If you think that's ridiculous though I won't be telling you what I'll have ;/

That's just lazy as ****. 8 weeks is what, 320 hours or so? You'll spend at least half that in the air and another half in the car. Perfect opportunity to study up. What do you intend to do instead in that time, play with yourself?

Pisses me off to see some arrogant sponging off daddy in lieu of taking out a student loan, most of which won't be paid back. Some of us can barely survive on what we get from student finance, and you refuse it?
Worked out that due to a freak set of circumstances, I'll probably get the max amount this year (£11.5k, most of it non-repayable), but only a £5k loan the year after... I'd better save most of my first year cash haha

It means more money is in the pot of student for the students who need it, so why complain...

Pisses me off to see such ignorance and hypocritical arrogance. If you struggle to survive on student finance, you seriously need to adjust your lifestyle- the ones receiving top level maintenance grant and loans and university bursaries seem to be some of the richest students about! Spare a thought for those of us, if we didn't sponge off daddy, would have to live in poverty because the government thinks we're doing just fine.

Adjust my lifestyle? I've gone days at university without eating because I simply cannot afford to, I spend my money sparingly and wisely, thank you very much. I get the top level loan and grant, and after paying my rent in September I will be left with just over £800 to last 4 months. Didn't factor in rent increase for this year, so I'll have just about £600.

Have you had a look at moneysavingexpert.com £200 a month isn't fun but can be doable and you shouldn't have to skip meals. Look at the old style board and you should get some ideas on cheap but tasty meals

And here's me thinking I might struggle on 1000 a week :/
Not in the slightest. I think it's ridiculous how the government can expect students to live on £200 a month and maintain good mental health, grades, and healthy diet. tbf, £50 a week isn't THAT bad, but it's still majorly unacceptable in my book. You already see the number of people out of work succumbing to illness, it'd be a travesty if students got into that cycle before even entering work.

I guess £50 a week isn't so bad, it'll be okay though once I get a job, I SHOULD be able to get one, hopefully!
Don't people on the dole/JSA get more than £50 a week? The student finance system needs a major reform.
