Bank holidays is like 12 quid or something silly.

Is next Monday a bank holiday? I'm working that, I've gotta rush back from Reading to get there in time. I'm going to be absolutely shattered.

I managed on 50 quid a week for things like shopping, drinking and buying the odd bit of stationary. This didn't include rent which was 69 quid for me in the 2nd year!
Its easy to live cheaply in Bristol, everywhere has student discounts and even the likes of Sainsburys is cheap as long as you know where to look (i.e. the reduced sections!). My advice is limit the boozing to Friday nights as the rest of the week is ****e for clubbing and Fridays do have the WEDGE!

im on £7 an hour working at some sh*t food store. but you have to remember that living costs in the UK in general are very high and Bristol is much higher than average in the UK, meaning Bristol is VERY EXPENSIVE!

Roughly how much did people spend / are people planning to spend in Freshers' Week?

Most of my friends spent £200-£300 in Freshers Week. And my friends aren't rich! Everything seems to cost a bomb- buying food (you eat out a lot), drinking (obviously!), joining societies, paying deposits, buying outfits (hehe), paying internet charges, buying books, the list is endless...

I've already eaten 600 pounds into overdraft and don't have any savings an parents aren't giving me anything.

I'm going to have to work. Hard.

I've just got a new overdraft...and it's payday on Friday.

Hmmm yes that will all get spent before the end of the month.

Like I mean, for uni you need a whole new wardrobe innit....and then also just like new cds, books, DVDs. Yes...I need those things for uni.

CDs!!?!??! thats so 2005 baby.

but yeh i also have 1.2 grand overdraft and just got paid
ebay will be my downfall.

The best thing about CDs is that I don't even use them, I rip them onto my laptop and then they just sit in a pile on the floor.

I haven't bought any in ages, and I download ludicrous amounts...so I feel I'm due a splurt in HMV.

Nah just save it all up for spending in Fopp.

Reply 30

Fopp in Covent Garden is cool.

I got Ágætis byrjun in there for £4.

Reply 31

Ah not bad ... I got mine free :p:

I feel guilty if I download too much so I have a feeling I'm gonna be spending loads on CDs/giggage.

Reply 32

Yeah I got it for free as well...but I bought it after anyways. Nice album to have in your collection.

I got Takk in the US for like $10. That was cool. ( ) cost me an arm and a leg, but it's fair enough...cos that is their best album.

nang.

Reply 33

You wasted your money on Takk heh.

Reply 34

Not a fan?

Personally I love it. 'Gong' and 'Sæglópur' are up there with my fav Victory Rose tracks.

Yeah they've had better albums, but that don't make it crap.

Reply 35

Wouldn't say I hate it but Takk did absolutely nothing for me.

Reply 36

Really? Musically speaking it isn't that far removed from their earlier stuff. Maybe from ( ), but not the two albums previous to that.

It's a lot more upbeat I suppose. Bare bells and that.

Reply 37

I dunno I thought it sounded nothing like their earlier stuff. Too poppy but not in the good way.

Reply 38

It's not really poppy...I suppose a few of the tracks have a more conventional structure, and it's a lot less darker than a lot of their ouevre.

I don't think it was a cynical attempt by them to become more popular or anything, they got randomly big via Takk cos of that BBC advert but that's just a thing that happened to them, not something they conspired to happen.

'Hoppípolla' is a bit crap though. It was annoying that when I saw them live that got the best reception, despite the fact that tracks like 'Olsen Olsen' and 'Popplagið' were just amazing beyond description.

Reply 39

Yeah, Hoppípolla put me right off. I don't think they intentionally tried to make it more popular either but still doesn't do anything for me.
