Movie Madness is an event pitting 64 films against each other in a tournament where only one will triumph (to find out more, click here).
Who will progress to the next round? You decide.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Perhaps the most famous cinematic disappointment ever, The Shawshank Redemption made up for it's poor box office with a second wind on home release based almost solely on word of mouth, catapulting it to the top of many people's film lists. Spanning decades, the film looks at life in prison and a blossoming friendship between the prison's fixer and a man convinced of his own innocence.

American Beauty (1999)
Sam Mendes' cleverly constructed satire about life in American suburbia tells the story of a man in a mid-life crisis as he finds himself falling for his daughter's friend, while his daughter finds herself the object of her creepy neighbour's affection. Masterfully presented and featuring an incredible central performance from Kevin Spacey that brings the entire film together, American Beauty earned 5 Oscars and was widely considered the best film of its year.

No film beats Shawshank.
Shawshank is a fine film, but IMO is also slightly overrated and comes with a poor final scene.

American Beauty, which I appreciate really doesn't have a chance, is an example of modern moviemaking at its finest.

AB for me.

Shawshank is overrated. Sure it's a great film, but nowhere near the top. I think it gets so much praise due to a) Morgan Freeman being loved by everyone b) it's a classic feel-good story with a fairy-tale ending

American Beauty is better

I had to vote for Shawshank, partly down to me predicting it would get to the overall final.

Also, it's a classic feel good film with an interesting clever story along the way.

It's also unashamedly rips-off Escape from Alcatraz made 15 years earlier - even down to the plotline, character development, escape method, male-rape, prison pets, self harm etc. etc. and pretty much takes every prison cliché ever made and puts it in one film.

Shawshank: lacks originality, full of cliché, no thought required.

American Beauty: originality, metaphors, superior acting, thought provoking narrative.

No contest.

Fair it's not original. I didn't know it ripped everything off that other film. :holmes:

The problem is, it's still a very enjoyable film and has been watching and enjoyed by more people than American Beauty.

I'd be surprised for it to be beaten.

there is 2.5 more days of voting though so all can change, 70-30% atm though in favour of Shawshank. Would be a GIANT upset for it to go out though.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them both too!

Shawshank will likely go through simply because AB will not have been seen by the majority. It doesn't have the same appeal and is a more demanding film to watch.

Enjoyment is one aspect, but for me, AB is on a different plane.

Both great films. Shawshank has the emotional resonance, but American Beauty has the provocation of thought that can change who you are. American Beauty deserves the win in my opinion.

Shawshank, while good, is incredibly over-rated. I think American Beauty is better, by far.

Weird. Most of the comments are pro American Beauty yet the vote is shawshank 80% of the way!

Yeah, I noticed that. I think some people might be a little embarrassed about preferring Shawshank Redemption.

Or the popular vote reflects the fact that far more have seen Shawshank? A vote restricted to those who have seen both would have been interesting!

Shawshank is seeded to be up against One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the next round, which may see a similar scenario.

True, that's probably part of it - but that doesn't completely account for the fact that the majority of comments say they prefer American Beauty and the votes say that they prefer Shawshank. I think there's an element of embarrassment to it. I definitely agree that the fact that more people have seen Shawshank will push it to win even though I definitely don't think it deserves to win.

I think it's probably due to the film fans wanting to comment prefering American Beauty whereas the casual fans that drop in/out without voting go Shawshank since they either haven't seen both or prefer shawshank.
